Cant comment on the e46, but my mate had en e36 EVO with 170k and drove well! infact it felt almost as good as my old M3 evo which only had 55k on the clock.
As long as any advisory work has also been carried out and the car has not been 'serviced' just for a stamp in the book it should be fine, if it's the right money.
