Problem: very lumpy rattly idle, and comedy pogo effect on a closed throttle from around 3k rpm.
Short term fix: lots of clutch slipping, and keeping the revs at 2k whilst stationary to prevent feeling seasick, and saving the Vanos from shunt and rattle.

Well, seeing as my independant couldn't diagnose the problem with my car, I dropped it off at the dealership near work to have the car evaluated. They came up with an exhaust cam problem. They reset this, fitted new VANOS bolts and gave me the call to pick the car up. I filled in a questionairre whilst waiting for the girl to bring my car round from the carpark. She was pretty, I was in a good mood, the car was fixed, I was not too much out of pocket, the sun was shining etc...

As the M3 rolled up, I could see the car rocking on it's uprated suspension, and revving itelf to bits, exactly as it had done when I dropped it off. After a few calm words, the girl brought round the tech who had worked on the car, and after a bit of under bonnet revving, the car settled down to a respectable tickover. I said that if I wasn't happy, I'd be bringing the car back on the same job for them to have another look at. This was last Friday, and on Monday I booked the car in for the following Monday - today.

They have just called me with the deflating news that the Vanos is shagged, not maintaining pressure (on the exhaust solenoid no doubt) and it'll be £2500 for a new unit, thank you very much Mr Campbell.

Obviously I'm not going forward with this, and will be bringing up the fact that the cam was out because of the Vanos, so basically in my eyes they diagnosed and worked on the affect rather than the cause.

I have looked around on the web and came across these pages

So my grand plan is to go back to my inde and see if he'll fit new solenoids with new seals. Should be around £300 Wish me luck

Any advice from the M-power sages?
