m3 evo VANOS

hi,,, just bought an m3 evo to make a track sg out of.. wot does the VANOS do on this engine im sure mine is fine it has fbmwsh all i know is they go a bit rattly is this cold or hot and does it effect the runnin of the car...
only curious because ive previously owned a z3mcoupe which i was convinced was perfect it was v,low mileage with fbmwsh,,, one week after i sold the vehicle i recieved a phone call to tell me the vanos had gone tits up!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
does anyone about de-vanos kits ive seen them in the states???
