Hi Guys, I have had the Coupe for a few months now, has anyone had trouble when changing into 2nd gear, it just seem's a little stiff compared to the rest of the gears at low rev's

Any input would be great !

Cheers

Its the clutch delay valve (CDV). Do a search for removal methods which effectively replace it with a non-operational valve which improves the gearshift.

I have experienced the exact same thing and the CDV valve is the next modification on the list yes
I don't know if some are worse than others but I have read that it is not a problem for some and at first I just put it down to over exuberance and thought that my driving style needed some fettling, ( especially with second gear bunny hopping! ), but no, it can not be done and the mod must take place. At least I now know that it was the car at fault all along and can once again rest assured in the knowledge that I am STILL the driving God that I always knew I was hehe

Cheers guys

ive learned how to use the gearbox properly, ive got a niggling fealing that if it didnt need to be their bmw wouldnt go throught the cost of putting it on the gearbox so maybe its their to protect somethink, id hate to have to pay for a z4m gearbox on my own with no bmw contributions, does anybody else think like this? but more to the point ive got so used to the box now i drive it as smoothly as my daily golf TDI, i bet if i got rid of the cdv id be much more jerky.

I'd like to know how they would know you fitted a modified CDV in the event of a failure of the gearbox, externally it's the exact same part and the chances of them taking it off to examine it are next to zero. Secondly it isn't going to cause a failure of the gearbox or the clutch, the modified valve merely opens a restriction in the flow of the fluid and allows the clutch to engage immediately without the slight artificial delay that the normal valve causes. In contrast to what was stated the fitting of a modified CDV will make the clutch movement less jerky and give the driver more control.

Despite having said all that the fitting of the modified CDV will not solve any notchiness in engaging second gear, that's a long standing trait of this gearbox which you have to live with. It's normally at it's worst when cold and almost disappears when warm.

Has anyone tried using a different weight oil to overcome said notchiness?

The manual M3's have a CDV yet the SMG version doesn't and uses the same running gear, and from what I understand on it's fastest setting the SMG gearbox can produce some pretty harsh changes.
