Hi all,

I currently use Silkolene Pro S 5w40 in my 1999 evo. I have heard Royal purple is the best oil for the Evo, can anyone one suggest exactly which Royal purple oil and where i can get it from.
Also what are peoples opinions? Is Silkolene fine (no track use) or should i switch.

Thanks!

I think the weight of the oil is more important than the brand (relatively speaking) and you're spot on with the 5W 40. Mine has been run on a diet of Shell Helix 5W 40 (as has my M5) and it's been fine.

Don't really see any point in changing it TBH.

I thought the EVO needed 10W 60? I used to run mine on Castrol edge when serviced and then Millers fully syn for the interim service, normally about 4k miles in...

oh oh, here we go again hehe

5W 40 seems to be fine for the S50. 10W 60 is for the S54 non?

My rule of thumb is this; as the car gets older and gets more miles on the clock (ie becomes a high mileage car, circa 65,000 miles or so) use thicker viscosity oil. Thin oil (ie 10w60) will be used more quickly as the car gets older from my experiece.

5w30 or 5w40 semi or fully synethetic should be more than fine. 10w60 for first 65,000 miles

10W 60 certainly for the S54, and i run the M5 on it, i would also run an S50 on it if i had one.

I Run my E36 M3 Evo on 10-60 Edge Sport. It doesn't use a drop.
I think this is the recommended oil for both engines.

Well both BMW specialists who've seen my car recomend good old 5W 40. Same for the M5 too.

Neither use a drop either. Actually that's tnot strictly true; the M3 uses nowt and the M5 doesn't burn any, rather it just leaks out of every seal/join you can imagine hehe

What do BMW recommend? What do your owners manuals recommend, weight wise not brand wise?

BMW recommend TWS or Castrol Edge 10W 60.

Ask Opieoil man (forum sponsor, sticky in General Gassing I think) - IMHO Silkolene Pro S is one of the top oils out there.

The only reason BMW 'recommend' Castrol is because that's who they get the biggest discount from .. There are plenty of oils better than 'Edge' or 'Mobil 1' for that matter ..

PS - Silkolene Pro S is also purple in colour ...wink

RP is good stuff but I have only used it in the Gbox and Diff. Dont think I would put it in the engine though. Even in 10W 60 form. I prefer mainstream mobil/castrol etc...

Sorry on the RP purple oil again. The reason i wish to use it in my EVO is due to the high film strength, im hoping that was help against wear in the Vanos system the most. What i am not sure is that the XPR 10w40 RP oil is suitable for all year round use.

Thanks

nonsense.

You protect agaist Vanos wear by properly warming your engine and not exceeding 2500 rpm until the oil temp is higher than 70 and making sure that your oil levels are always where they should be.
