Hello Everyone

new to the forum just got myself 96 plate m3 evo saloon
and after only a couple of days ownership the engine decided to die on me.

It sounds like the big ends are away, now i am not on here to complain or whine i would just like some advice as to what other things i can do to the car whilst it is in bits

i have a limited budget but there is no hurry to get the car back on the road
so if it s something worth doing then i can wait and get it
so far the only thing i have really seen or heard is that arp rod bolts seem to be a must any other advice would be much appreciated

Thank you in advance

Robert

I know how you feel although mine did atleast last 3months before distroying the bottom end.

I ended up replacing the engine as it was cheaper that rebuilding, I think second hand engine was £2000ish from a reputable breaker and i sold the head, cams, throttle bodies etc of the old engine for around £1k. still leaves a big bill on a £5-8k car but could have been a whole lot worse

i have waited a long time to get one of these and my goal is to keep it a long time so i want it done properly

I think they are very expensive to rebuild. Mine went in a fairly big way and i'm sure there was damage to the crank. Think i was lloking at nearer £4K for a rebuild

New engines can be bought from BMW for around £9K

i will need to wait as my daily runner's gearbox has packed in so it will all have to go on hold just now

when i get round to doing the m3 i will be removing the engine with a friend and sending it to a local specialist
so i will save little on labour.

every place i look people seem to be replacing the engines rather than fix them but i am sure in the long run it would be better to repair it as then i know what is under the bonnet rather than replace it then the same thing happen again only time will tell

i look forward to letting you know the result
all be it no time soon
