Yes, now go and have and have a good stiff drink followed by a cold shower, and just hope that your post has not been read by a family memberredcard

I would accept it if it is to tow a trailer with a sport car having twice the power of the M5 on it.

I have a tow bar on my E46 M3 - to tow a machine with only 50 hp.

Yes, of course it is. Now stick it on the latest M5 bushpig and it will be OK.. E34 is so pure a design that to do this would be criminal in extremis!

Rubbish, the M5 is not a supercar or out and out sportscar, it's a great all rounder.

Pop the towbar on.

Dave!

Agreed. It would be cool to tow a Caterham/Ultima etc but when your not you will just look like a caravaner...

Erm,

My E35 M5 came with a factory fitted towbar and by all accounts it's bloody good at towing stuff (although I've never had the need to myself).

I say go for it. As Dave said above, the M5 is still a big four door saloon and not a super car. It will however tow bloody quickly!

Is it detachable? or fixed/welded to the subframe?

Yep, it's detachable. Quite a neat installation (as you'd expect) and you'd never know it was there .

Had a detachable factory one fitted to my E36 M3 Cab for towing a small ski boat, it was great for the job. Now I use an old modeo though..........

Yep my E34 M5 has the factory detachable towbar too, as has been said it's a very neat install with a detachable piece of blanking trim where the towbar slots in. The boot even has brackets and a compartment to store the towbar when not in use, a typical well thought out BMW design and install. I'll sort some photos out if anyones interested (can't say I have used it yet).
