Turned a bearing?

In some of the previous threads, i have noticed the expression "engine turned a bearing". Is this a common failure? I am assuming it is refering to the big end bearings, but please correct me if i am incorrect. Thnaks

I did this on my E36 M3, and i think it can be a problem on E46 M3's which haven't had the running in service.

I don't think its common but far from unheard of.
