Near the catlytic converter. Check how many wires it has, you can get a universal one for around £35-45.

S50 there are two, one in each CAT.
S54 there is one just before the CAT and TWO at the back of the CATS.

Get the car in the air and all will be revealled.

EDIT; If the CATS have been removed from your car it will still need Lambda probes, they are probably screwed in the CAT replacement pipe, they wil be the only things in the exhaust system with wires coming off the end of them.

when I brought the car they gave me a de-cat pipe as the put the cat back on for MOT when I took the center cat pipe off their were no probes or wires , however I noticed the cat pipe had the holes filled with steel bung plug !! I removed the de-cat pipes because they were to loud and replaced them with cherry bombs which their is no resinance noise in the car and sounds quite good . when the car was recently put on a diagnostic it was not reading any sensors 5amps !! something like that but this has only recently happend . it was running fine when I removed the cats for the de-cat pipes, so my assumption is were did the person who orignaly removed the cats put the lambas ?
Anyone !!

You need to find out what has been done on your car then.

hence me trying to find the lamba wires and or to see if anyone knows of a modification done on this particular model when it has been de-catted ? could the wires have just been pulled out of the loom or mabey clipped to the down pipes ?

You will have a sodding great socket for the O2 sensor to plug into, have a look for that (see typical BMW O2 sensor below). My guess is it will be forward of the cats, up near the actual engine or directly above the cats. The length of the wire run in the schematics above will give a rough idea (if drawn roughly to scale).

As with all O2 sensors I would buy a genuine manufacturers part, aftermarket ones often don't last as long.

Just to add, looking at the schematics, the S50 uses smaller connectors than the photo above but the same principle applies though.

Thanks for all the help guys :-) think I will get it on the ramps and remove the 1st set of downpipes from the manifold and have a look up to see if I can find any traces of wires etc ...
