Ive offered the guy a swap with my S3... and he seems keen.. will look at the weekend... what kind of sounds would a bad vanos unit make? also are there any specific and unusual places to look for rust etc? Looks pretty clean in the picture... but its exactly that... a picture! we shall see!
Any Response greatly appreciated... as a dog.. would pretty much Kill me money wise...

Check the arches and bootlid edges for rust.
As for the Vanos, ensure the car pulls hard from just over 2000 RPM until the limiter, the Vanos really comes into its own in the later half of the rev range. Check the Vanos for the classic 'marbles in a can' sound by allowing the car to idle and the revving the car to approx 2500RPM and letting the revs fall.
Check all the electrics, switches, windows, etc too.

Personally I'd rather know what's been replaced underneath than what the colour of stitching on the seats is.
Assuming all suspesion components are original (vendor never mentioned otherwise), it will drive like a boat with that mileage. Bugdet another £2-3k to make it drive like it should.
A lot of the guys on here wax lyrical about condition being the top priority. It is important, but 90% of the time, all you can assess is the exterior of the car and little else.
If you've not driven one before, a high miler on original suspension may feel OK, but it wont be.
Far better instead to spend the most you can possibly afford on the lowest mileage one you can find IMO. It will cost you less in the long term

I belive we may know each other. Does the name Daz123456 on XBox Live mean anything to you?

ASBO, i'm afraid not bud
Not what? You mean the suspension is all original?I'd walk unless you are prepared to spend ££££'s on new suspension. There will be a few out there that've had a thorough overhall.
Also, don't be afraid to buy a modified one. At this level 'modified' should mean 'enhanced' and not 'chavved'. My 39k mile example has been extensively modified and as far as I'm concerned, is the car BMW should have made. By comparison a standard car feels fat and wallowy.
