My M3 has developed a proplem where it goes flat around 5000rpm or when really bad 3000rpm. It started doing it around a year ago and is getting worse. You can have your foot flat and it just wont pick up. The ECU doesnt register any problems and it is now chucking out blue smoke when it happens, any suggestion would be much appreciated.

Sounds bad.

Best port of call is www.e36coupe.com but for some reason you will currently find that site at www.bmwowner.com

May be the MAF sensor.

Try cleaning it first before you spend any money.

I just picked up a new MAF on eBay for £50 as minbe is running a bit lumpy - so it's worth having a look around before going for a £250 OEM one.

They do fail and will then give false readings to the ECU which could lead to the problems you have been having.

Does your cheap an cheerful MAF work oK?
If its for an M5 you can get an identical BOSCH part from VW for £56.

Had an old 525i E34 that exhibited exactly the same symptoms it was the lambda sensor after the cat

I might be way off but it could be worth checking
