Peeps, can anyone put my mind at rest - after having my pads and discs changed about 600 miles ago...the car has been making a noise under heavy breaking.

It is hard to describe...but kind of a vibration, grinding noise (and a slight feel through the pedal...or maybe it is the whole chassis).

Is this a feature of the brakes - maybe for the first 1,000 miles or so? Or should I be concerned.

I took the car back into the garage (Hexagon) who kindly charged me £100, and concluded nothing...oh and got permission for an 'engineer' to take the car home over night to 'replicate' the problem....and use 1/4 tank of fuel...

What's the pedal travel like? If I were you I'd remove each wheel and check that the pads have been changed. If there's a nice shiny set of pads in there then your problem could be glazing of the pads (caused sometimes by incorrect bedding in). This will fade in time.

However, if your stealership is anything like most, I wouldn't be surprised if you're still running the original discs/pads...

As for your other problem, report the engineer and your dealership to BMW GB. They have insurance for commercial use only (i.e like any other garage), not for personal use. That is totally unacceptable.

As far as I know - just the standard replacement for the M3...

I am hestitant to remove the wheel - I don't have a decent torque wrench so refitting would be compromised...unless of course the Stealership (I like that one) just used a old wrench that was lying around...

I've yet to use a torque wrench for tightening my wheel nuts and not one has ever fallen off. Don't be such a girl!

Moreover, if BMW genuinely did re-fit the wheels to a dedicated torque setting I'll eat my hat.

mmm buffy it is a strange rubbing noise though...not popping - I used to have a cerbera and the racing brakes on that squeeled like anything - but this noise is worrying...plus I could swear it wasn't there before i got the new pads and dics...

I am going to take it in to Highhams and get them to test it...as I said my Highgate dealer (mentioning no names) said there was nothing wrong with it...

mmm...that is a worry in my mind...I bought the car with Dunlop tyres on...since then have had two punctures and replaced them with the 'recommended' Conti Sport contacts...

They are the 18" wheels...so not too low profile...

The punctures were NSF and NSB - so the near side is all Conti and far side Dunlops...

Anyone ever done the same different on each side...I don't feel any 'pulling' - just the noise...

Don't really fancy forking out another £250 on two new tyres...

Did you get to the bottom of this yet..?

These brakes are notorious for being rubbish when they get too hot.. did you bed the pads in properly for 100 miles with no aggresive braking or did you stand on them 5 miles up the road from the dealers drive..?

Stock brakes are noisy, i had a very similar exp with mine, 'orrible noise and vibration throught the steering, along with pedal bounce.. over heated pads were the problem, if you ever track it, or for fast road work go to some better pads.. this is most likely the problem.. i found DS2500 a good road pad, the track guys like Pagids, but they are 2wice the price..

Other causes of vibration could be warped disc's, (possible) sticky caliper (unlikely) buggered pads (most likely)or knackered control arm bushes would also give you steering vibration..

I am getting the tyres sorted this weekend - then going to see what the noise is like..

First 300 miles was easy motorway travel with light braking...I was being sympathetic.

I will report on what difference I notice with Conti's on all 4 corners...

thanks for suggestions
