I think the consensus is that it can be done but at a cost that isn't worth considering.....especially as TomTom's etc are so cheap and so good now.

I have the factory system in my Z4 (Navteq based). It is nowhere as good as aftermarket systems from functionality through to screen resolution. It certainly doesn't have useful features like cameras, actual speed etc. Map upgrades are officially about £100....

However, it does have BMW Assist - if a phone is fitted; dial up, tell them what or where you need and it can be sent to your sat nav as a destination. It has pretty good radio station traffic messaging/re-routing, plus in the event a accident occurs it will call the emergency services with your last known position. Finally, destinations can be sent to the car via Google maps to save fiddling in the car. Quite cool to sit in the office, google the client address, send to the car, climb in and go! Even given these features I wouldn't spec on a new car / pay extra. I might though if it had an open system, greater functionality, on line add-ons etc.

EFA - speling...

A £150 TomTom is much better than the original factory-fit item that cost around £2k.

Ian, how do i find out about getting directions sent to my car? It's got the Nav etc on and has my phone BT'd to it.

Also, what number do you call for drive assist or do you go via the menu on the nav?

Intersting that though, thanks for posting.

It does make you wonder why people say the SatNav adds another £1.5k on to the price of the car (2nd hand)....

Don't even get me started on the those 19" shiny alloys...you ever been on a bumpy b-road with those...eeesh...

It doesn't – it's the dealer's argument to knock you down if your car hasn't got it.

I would definitely have it. It does (normally) what it is supposed to do, and is well integrated with the interior. It makes a good interior better and is also functional. What more could you want?

I wanted it and have it in mine...I think it looks the nuts, but is it really woth the £1.5k? I'd say no. Lots of the functions are great (evidentally, I dont even know what half of them are!)
