So im looking into one of these.

But am worried that the convertible may have been made slower, heavier and softer.

Does it handle just as well as the standard car and is it as quick in a straight line

The convertible is slightly heavier as you would expect, not sure what you mean by softer, I dont believe there is any difference in suspension. because of the weight it is reported slightly slower reported 0.4s to 100Kph and 2.1s difference in the short Hockenheim (this is a lot but not sure about conditions/driver in each case) http://www.fastestlaps.com/index.php?page_id=compa...

ultimately it depends how much you value a slight performance difference versus the joy of convertible driving

For me I bought and use my e46 M3 as a road car. For that the joy of open topped motoring and noise of listening to the pipes are more than worth the down side of a small amount of scuttle shake.

Its still a very quick capable car top on or off.

its also a good antidote to speeding and the day to day stress of driving in this world of gatsos etc.

I am quite happy to pootle along on a sunny day top down enjoying the weather and scenary whereas in my previous tin tops I would automatically switch to "maximum attack" mode.

then theres cross continent holiday trips to think about.

IMHO the convertible M3 looks better as well.

But all this is IMHO and plenty of Coupe drivers love theirs. Try both for yourself is the only answer.
