In my old M3 it was down behind the centre console. You have to take the bottom half of it away to get to it. I can only presume the new M3's are the same.
Take all of the panelling away
Right down under here
The location of the old one with it removed (basically down by your left shin)
The new one going in
A comparison
Not an easy job as its quite fiddly but bearing in mind the condition of the old probably worth it.
If the '01 - 06' M3's is in a totally diferent place then I have just wasted 2 minutes of our lives which we will never get back.
