After previously looking at an audi s4, i've decided to go for the more fun option, an e36 m3 evo.

My question to you lot is what should I expect? I have only ever been in a 2001 M5, and i was absolutely astounded by how quick a car that size moves.

so, any experiences or things to offer?

thank's a lot!

Positives
- Great all rounder and good value for the money
- Comfortable on the motorway (with good fuel economy)
- Deceptively quick - the engines really are the best bit
- Compared to the S4 - RWD with a LSD which is nice...

Negatives
- Steering feel is poor imho
- Slower than the M5?!
- Factory suspension will be soggy by now - aftermarket kit is the way forward

Sure others have much to add - no doubt pages complaining about the factory brakes (which I think are fine for road and track if pads are upgraded...)

thanks a lot for the reply.

Yeah its a toss up between the S4 and M3, so far leaning towards the M3. Is it worth getting a cheaper (say 5.5 - 6k) car and then making the suspension changes (which would cost how much, by the way?) and wheel changes (ac schnitzer, probably a spelling mistake there!), or worth going the whole way for 7k?

You'd be surprised. A good M3 will hold it's own against the more powerful but heavier car. Of course most M3's out there are significantly down on power, so finding a good one is tricky.

Surrystyle, I'll get you that guide on Monday. Send me a PM to remind me though.

In a nutshell, you will need to refresh the suspension, but IMO you should retain the OE wheels. If you go larger you will increase unsprung weight - ruining the ride and blunting acceleration.

right, will do. cheers mate!

There's only one thing that is putting me off right now, and that is the running costs, i've heard of some freakishly high bills?

other than that, I would be happy as hell. It's just that i cannot honestly afford a couple of thousand everytime something goes pop hehe.

Don't be fooled into thinking they are cheap to run. I had to replace the ECU on mine which was a £2,000 bill.

However, buying the right one will save you ££££'s. Look at as many as you feasibly can until you're sick of the site of them! Buying the first one you see will end in disaster.

If you budget for between £1000-£1,500 a year in maintenace then you should be OK. Of course a failure like I had will throw that logic out the window!

Oh and don't be scared to buy a modified one. If it's been done properly and with a big budget there are some real gems to be had, and there's a better chance it will have been maintained properly too. The key words there are 'properly' and 'big budget', though. I'd rather see an externally standard one with a good suspension set up and perhaps some breathing enhancements than one dripped in tat.

yeah, i suppose any performance car and you are certainly looking at expensive to run. I must admit, I have seen some nicely modified M3's around. Shame that they have all most likely been street raced till all life left in them is gone. Why take a beautiful car and ruin it proving a point to a jumped up twerp in a non - turbo impreza every other evening?

I see it happen too many times at my sons college, I would much rather he be driving around in a nice s4 or M3 as opposed to some of the "tuner" pieces of rubbish that roll out of there.

anyway, rant over. I just hope my first M3 experience is a damn good one, I really do not know what to expect.

ask the question on Mtorque.com, you'll have a bigger audience of M3 owners to ask
