Dammit, a month and 1000 miles into ownership of an M6 (2 yrs old, around 15k miles on the clock), and I have got what I always feared, the dreaded transmission failure light.

I did a search and see that this has not been an issue on UK M5s and M6s. Any PH'ers had this? It seems I am missing 3rd gear and the car tells me it will not to start the next time I turn the ignition. The car is driven mostly in P500 sport with gear change setting 5 and traction control off, although I have never abused it (like standing starts or trips to the red line when cold).

Would appreciate any feedback from anyone who's had this although I will be going to the dealer tomorrow (hope they cover the transmission!)

Ashok should be your man as he had countless problems with his E60 M5. He's normally found around, but most likely on the M5 forum :

Guessing a sensor issue. My brother's 55 plate M5 had a gearbox hydraulic sensor replaced on one occasion and then a modified SZL sensor situated in the steering column. No problems with the gearbox since.

Hmm...

Started the car this morning and everything seems fine. 3rd gear is selecting and no warning light. Maybe it is a sensor thing as you suggest, although Ashok's experiences sound scary.

I must say, though, this kind of episode convinces me that I am not an enthusiast of modern cars, despite the obvious brilliance of the M6. Cars these days have too much computing power to go wrong and diagnose, too much desensitising rubber, plastic and metal between the driver and the road, and too many settings from which to choose.

I think if there was a stick shift M6 or M5, I would undoubtedly prefer that.

Oh, one final thing, although I know it's normal to hear clunks from the transmission, I do get a groaning sound accelerating gently out of tight right handers whilst in a low gear - it sounds disconcertingly loud for a diff and was wondering whether this was normal?

My reputation precedes me!

I finally threw in the towel with M division and plumped for an Alpina - couldn't be happier.

My experience is probably an extreme example but there are over 100 members of the M5board who have had their cars off the road due to the RCOD.

Clunking of the transmission is considered 'normal' with SMGIII.

How about the groaning sound on turning?

(Hope the Alpina works out for you - let us know how it compares to the M5).

BMW will change the diff oil to a different spec oil if you complain about a problem........ All under warranty of course.

Wow, brilliant - thanks. One cannot underestimate the level of stupidity at main dealers in this country so I will take this with me.

Just an update:

Car booked in at the dealer. Calls me two days later (how can it take so long?) to tell me the differential needs to be replaced (but is suitably vague about the exact reason for this). Starts by saying M cars are only covered for 2 years at which point I go into an apoplectic rage (the car was purchased from their pre-approved dept barely a month ago and has a third year aftermarket warranty which on paper doesn't cover the transmission and diff).

I think the poor chap is a bit taken aback at the "have it with both barrels" response, but he says goodwill ought to cover it. I don't care what they call it, I'm certainly not paying for it...
