Thinking of buying an m3
Discussion
Hi all, i currently own a 98 328 sport.
Its been about a year since i have owned the car and fancy a change. So i thought to myself, what about an m3 saloon for insurance reasons! now i have had an even sickening thought of buying either an m3 evo coupe or an evo convertible (yes i know they are a bit girly but ideal for the summer).
The thing is im only 20 and have 3 points so need a decent price on insurance.
I really want one of these cars now but would appreciate some views on my situation.
I have heard of vanos problems but like i have read before its a bit of a gamble.
I would just like some views please.
Thanks in advance.
Dave

If you are only 20 then you've got very little hope of decent insurance I'm afraid. I'm still paying silly money at age 31. The e36 M3 is one of the most expensive cars to insure as unfortunately, being now quite cheap it's within reach of 20 yr olds (no offence intended) or Chavs that end up bending them all to often. Also lots have been stolen. Perversly, the e46 is cheaper to insure on the whole.
im 28, clean lisence, parked off road, 10,000 per year and still paying £2100 on e46 m3,i have shopped around and i found most people wont touch m3 insurance and the ones that do think its a lisence to print money.
hope you get it sorted as i had an e36 evo coupe before this e46 m3 and i still miss it now
good luck

try privilege and direct line. I used moneysupermarket, confused.com, elephant, compare the market, go compare, tesco comparison...basically everything
they gave me far better an dvery near prices -I am 35 with 5yrs NCB unprotected
I believe they only insure cars with trackers though but it is worth it

I brought an elise when I was 20 which I paid a crazy amount to insure. Really unless you want to spend a couple of grand a year I think you need to go third party. That's what I did, it made driving more interesting... there was no room for error.
As for the 28 year old paying £1,800 he's being ripped off, I brought my M3 when I was 23 and paid £1,500. That was with Tesco, now at 26 it's only £1,050 per year. I also have three points.

you'd probably better off going for a 3L M3, mine cost me £780 full comb, 28 year old with Bell an EVO would of been more like £1200, my first(proper) car was a Toyota Celica, 2.0, GTi, twin-cam, 16 valve, pop up head lights thing and that cost £1400 and i was 19 or 20 when i got that
just checked with confused.com what it could be this year and the lowest was £571 that's more like it
