Im thinking of buying one, and was wondering if someone could answer some queries,
1, How many were registered in the UK ?
2, What is the BHP compared to the E28 M5 ?
3, Are they reliable despite the usual older car problems ?
I have my eye on one that he tells me is virtually mint with sub 100k miles for £2600. Is this expensive.
Thanks in advance.

218 BHP , M5 is 286BHP
Dunno how many sold - although they were very common at the time (standard 535i far rarer) - must have sold at least thousand M535i per year .Ran from B to E reg

1) They weren't rare intially...genuinely really good ones are now!

2) Stock BHP is 218 BHP.

3) M30 engine (if serviced properly) probably ranks up there as one of BMW's best ever engines. Certainly expensive for them to build but a basic engine design that endured from the 1960's through to the 1990's. 'The engine' above all others that really set BMW apart as an engine builder.

But that's not where the weakness in the E28 lies.

I'm currently restoring two...an M535i and a 528iSE. The restorations costs on two outwardly very good cars will run to between £4-5K by the time they're finished....that's each!

If it REALLY is 'that' good....£2600 is very, very cheap!

Hi John

No still working hard on the M535i...have the week off this week so really stuck into it. I have a chap who's a semi-retired ex-BMW Head Tech who comes to work on cars for me coming tomorrow for a couple of days so there's a load of stuff I'm trying to get ready. Hopefully that will be all the mechanical stuff done and then it should be more or less ready to go off to the body/paintshop.

The Polaris Silver 528iSE should be back in a couple of weeks then just final finishing by me and it'll be done hopefully.

I've got hundreds of pics of both but there all unsorted as yet.

Agree with all those comments, I was a tech at a main dealer when they were current (god Im'e old!) one of the best BMW's to drive, Auto box can be an issue, C/R manual is best fun.
A good service history would be nice as lack of oil changes can lead to premature cam failure, watch out for rust especially behind body kit, Front billies can seize and hammer strut top mounts skyward, try and get it to a specialist for a check over before parting with cash.

All very true!

The M535i I'm doing is a Switchable Auto...but I previously owned one with the C/R Dogleg 'Box...very fast car!

Removal of the bodykit revealed some of the horrors mentioned above. It's not going back on! Other common serious rust points around the jacking points front and rear, sills, back arches...

Front Bilsteins and brakes (calipers to be shot-blasted, rebuilt, painted, new discs, pads and fluid change) being done tomorrow and Friday!

Fortunately, I have one of your ex-colleagues coming to do the front struts with me. It's one thing I'm just not prepared to do on my own i.e muck about with spring compressors! I think he's even older than you Graham..was a BMW head tech for over 25 years and was working for them when the first CSLs (E9) came into the country.

Here's a pic of the 'debris' left behind after today's efforts to sort out a dicky S.I board! These are the bits left over that didn't go back in the car...The fully functioning one is now back in the car:
