Hi All,

I've managed to purchase a mint E36 M3 Evo and wondering what its worth. I bought it on a whim and my wife isn't best pleased so I intend to run it through the winter months and sell it on in the Spring and maybe turn a bit of a profit (that should please her!)

I had run a 98R E36 Evo Coupe up until recently for a couple of years which was in very good condition with 80k miles on and Met Black/Black Leather. I had it advertised at £8,500 and eventually I got £8,000 for it but it took time as although it was one of the nicest around, I think if the price is too high people won't even view.

The car I have just bought is a 97R Artic Silver/Light Grey Leather with FBMWSH and just 46k miles. It is without question absolutely mint. The paintwork is original and unmarked, not even the usual car wash brush marks. Not a single scratch or pin dent anywere and just 3 stone chips! The chap who owned it bought it as an approved used car from a main dealer in 2000 (one private owned previous to that) and has used the main dealer for everything ever since.

My question is what is this likely to be worth and it is due a service shortly - should I keep the MDSH up and take it to BMW or would it really harm the value if I took it to a good specialist?

Views appreciated.

Cheers

Simon

If you are only going to run it for a short period, and it has full BMW history already, get ONLY the service done at a main dealer. By saving £100 or so using an independent, will affect the value/ease of selling by more than the saving you will make on one service.

If you were planning to keep the car for a long time, then its a different story.

Remember ONLY get the service done by BMW, everything else get done independently.

At this age, I'd prefer to see a decent Indie look after it.

My E36 Evo has only 34k miles (27K when I bought it in June last year) and really is the best example in the country IMO (sorry to wee on your pomme de terre Simon wink).

Unless the main dealer is one of the few properly ///M accredited dealers in the UK, then I'd be worried that it hadn't been maintained properly.

A decent Indie on the other hand , will likely have done things properly. I use a small two man-band garage in the middle of no-where to look after mine. The prime reason being that I trust them to do the work.

ETA: Oh and to answer the question, I should think somewhere around the 10 - 11k mark would be reasonable for a truly minty McMint low mileage example (I hope!)

But if you were buying one, would you prefer to see a book full of BMW stamps, or some small garage you have never heard of??

Dont get me wrong Im not suggesting for a minute that the main dealer is better(i use some very good indy's myself), only that the general buying publilc prefer to see a brand they know.

I'd want to see a well known M specialist stamp in the book, because they will actually adjust the valve clearances instead of just inspecting them like some BMW dealers do

Unless you knocked him down from the £7.7k I wouldn't get too excited about the profit.

Yes, but that person will be out there. There will always be a market, albeit limited, for properly mint examples of these cars, or any M car for that matter. It's just a question of being sensible about the price, i.e not asking E46 money, and having plenty time and patience.

I thought you'd decided to keep it.

Thanks guys for your views. I actually ended up paying £7.4k and I am likely to spend another £500 on a few things. I share many of your views re main dealers and will be taking it to ETA as they have always offered me a great service.

I would hope that it would be worth between £8.5k - £9k to the right person. As with all these things, if you're not in a hurry then someone will eventually come along wanting that special car.

NO.

As our Mr Vixpy quite rightly states, BMW dealerships have a habit of doing sod all when it comes to properly servicing these cars.

Therefore I'd rather see a good indie who I know will have serviced the car properly. A fully stamped book at this age means bugger all and if anything would suggest the car will need the clearances doing ASAP.

I'm toying with the idea of buying one but it probably wouldn't get used either.

If this was the one on autotrader last week it was only 20 odd miles away from me, was going to have a look too. Changing the subject I see you've had my other prospect, a 944 turbo, how does the evo compare to the porker ?.

I would rather have a good independant dealer service my'n, rather than a big franchise main dealer who are generally so pressed for targets/ figures/ CSI scores, that they just want to get the cars in and out as quickly as possible, making as much money as they can?!

I'd love to see a pic of an Arctic Silver car with light grey leather - any chance?
