Chaps,

I have been considering a H&S exhaust for a while now but have a couple of questions.

1) How loud are they?
I know the main reason for getting one is to release the lovely V8 noise but I hate loud, loud exhausts. I find them embarassing and detract from the whole prestige image. The last thing I want to do is annoy the sleepig wife and neighbour every time I go to work. That would vex me. I had an ACS exhaust on my M3 and couldnt wait to change it back to standard. Would have been great for the track but way too loud on cold stat ups and droned terribly on the motorway.

2) Have any owners had any fault codes ping up after fitting the exhaust?

I found supersprint was the perfect compromise for the M3, quiet normally but gradually louder higher up the rev range.
I have seen youtube clips of the H&S but they dont really give an owners perspective.

I have Supersprint decat and full system on my M Roadster. Very well built, zero drone on motorways (least can't hear over the soft top racket wink ) and really only becomes vocal when you want i.e. when you open the throttles hard. Some might argue its to quiet but it is very deep sounding and not thrashy at all.
Hope that helps.

Have a look on the www.m5board.com E39 section for some really in-depth info re H&S exhausts....the pro's and the cons.

From what you are saying I'd advise don't do it !!

I have H&S and love the sound, under full throttle it's very loud. However due to the damping in the car it's not too bad on the motorway, ( I certainly don't find it intrusive).

But you will wake up the neighbours on early starts, and friends who've followed behind me on the motorways have commented that it is VERY loud.

Listen for yourself but I think you'd be best with OEM.

i have an H&S on my E46 M3, i love it.
there's a little drone between 3k and 4k on the motorway, but nothing the stereo ownt drown out.

it growls at low revs and screams under full acceleration.
Basically, i love it!

I got an Eisenmann Sport (83 mm tips) recently, and basically had the same concerns as you: Wanting to release a bit of that wonderful V8 sound but nothing OTT as I do tons of motorway mileage.

It has been perfect - more aggressive sounding when accelerating (a very cultured sound) but exactly the same sound levels as stock when cruising.

Whatever aftermarket pipe for the M5 you go for it'll always be loud at tickover on a cold morn. (especially if rear of car facing house) I had a Tubi on mine and wouldnt have changed it for the world tho.

Perhaps H&S is not the way to go then. I may have to splash on a supersprint for that quieter tone. Oh well...
Thanks for your replys guys

H&S are very accommodating, they have just developed an exhaust for the Z4M for me and are constantly tweaking it until it is right, i'm sure they could make it quieter if you wanted them to
