I have just heard, unofficially that BMW will not offer the (extortionate) extended warranty on the M5 if it hasnt had its 1500mile break in oil change on time.

Considering we had ours at 1900 miles, im somewhat peeved...

anyone else heard this?

thanks,

best,
adam

being BMW I would expect the late first service would be used as an excuse not to pay out on stuff anyway so they may have saved you money.

Why was yours late and is that an official line or hearsay?

Its similar to the e46 m3's, mine had its 1200mile run in service at 1245.

Unless BMW failed to make it clear to you, its gonna be a hard one to contest.

With the e46 m3's there was never any official line but general consensus was that if the service had been carried out 500 miles over the limit, then warranty claims may be subject to BMW discretion.

To be fair, if a car manages 30-40k after a run in that was done out of the 'parameters', any potential issues cannot be attributed to this run in service being late, surely not?

Did they inform you of that when you had it (belatedly) done?

If not, tell them to shove it.

I think that's always been the case with the M cars.

When I bought my E39 M5, the salesman told me that if the 1200 mile service is done at anything beyond 1800 miles, then the dealers cannot sell them as approved used cars, because BMW will not allow them to put the AUC warranty on it.

That's always been my understanding. My car started demanding its 1200 mile service at 900 miles, so I checked with BMW whether to do it then or wait until 1200 for fear that waiting when the car was already demanding the service might give me warranty issues. (they told me to wait)

when i was researching buying an M car one of the first rules was to check the running in service was done on time, otherwise walk away!

Dude, if only.

This running in service has always been a warranty breaker.

If it's not done on time then the warranty lapses. I believe this is stated in the documentation that comes with the car.

As for "telling them to shove it" unfortunately the problem is that they will simply tell you to shove any claims, and you then have to sue them. And you'll lose. And have to pay their costs as well as your own.

If a car hasn't had its running in service done on time, no warranty.

Sorry.

You would think could easily put a message on the i-Drive screen saying 'Service Due in xxxmiles OR lose your warranty'.

Adam.
At least you now don't have the dilemma of being stitched by BMW, you can freely search out a better deal from some of the independants.
Just let the original new car warranty expire by a couple of days first and then when it comes time to sell you can always say you couldn't get the BMW one because you let it lapse. ;o)

No after market warranty will properly cover any M Car. The claim limits are normally £2k. Will not cover Idrive etc. As for an M5, the engine must be £20k fitted I should think!

Hmmm. Not being unhelpful but that doesn't help you legally as the onus is on you the purchaser to read the documents.

It's a git, this, but they're strict on it I believe.

Well, it doesn't have the "or you'll lose your warranty", but it does tell you when the various services are due.

True and to be fair it does give a fair bit of warning, ie everytime you start he car (well on the e46 at least, can't remeber on the i-Drive models).

No why doesn't it just use your cell phone (and diary) to book itself a service and arrange for BMW to come round your house with an equivalent car and take yours off to be serviced?

It's all to do with the rear diff I believe.

Not sure about the E60, but the E39 M5 came from the factory with a thinner "running in" oil in the engine, gearbox and diff, that had to be changed for the proper stuff at the 1200 mile service.

I've heard different things from various sources. The concensus was always that 2000 miles was the limit. You may want to speak to someone in Bracknell to get the definitive word on this.
