Should I wait for the M DSG of the E92?

Disappointing but typical how little knowledge dealer personnel have. Way back when, when I had read that the car was to have DSG, the dealer did not even know that.
As it is BMW's first DSG, experience with any previous BM's is not relevant. VW DSG's are brilliant (I have driven it in a Golf GTi and an A3, reviews have been great for the Veyron version).
In the cars I drove, manoeuvering was easy. The car was almost identical to a good conventional automatic to drive. The only difference was that it responded instantly to manual changes, rather than with a slight delay, as a conventional automatic does.
I have decided to wait for a DSG car. I think it will be faster, more economical, and smoother than a manual, but less satisfying to drive because it will be too easy. A concern is that BMW will not get the gearbox quite right first time out. Examples of not getting things right first time are the original SMG and early iDrive systems (still bad in my opinion, but not quite as bad). Hopefully, however, software upgrades will be all it takes to sort out any problems.

There's no real problem with low speed manouevring with SMG-II, if you have any appreciable skill with operating a car at all. You just need a gentle right foot... I've not heard of SMG-III being any worse either.
Aa others point out, the performance of SMG is going to be quite different from the rumoured dual-clutch transmission in the E92 anyway.

the last one was superb and it was always crap in auto mode, wouldn't expect the new one to be much better, personally I would wait, the M manuals have always been notchy so no real pleasure from having a manual IMO
E92 is not notchy like the e46 (or at least the one I've been playing with isn't). What kind of lead time are you expecting if you wait for the auto? There are manuals in the system for delivery in February (ordered mine on Monday, build start date is 8 Jan, delivery early Feb).

In Belgium, dealer told me it will be there officially in march then say april for test and review then I will have to wait on the list after the DSG already on order (people ordering before launch) so he said expect july/august according to succes...Otherwise if I had ordered it last visit (2 weeks ago) it was build on first week of jan for delivery as yours (because I pick the open roof, dealer told me that the carbon roof was a 6 months delay due to production problem from "carbon" factory)
I am quite convince by the manual but as I am new to BMW I just wanted to explore my choice. The answer I was fearing was "Everybody WAIT for the dsg and only non connaisseurs go straight to the manual, which had explain the rapid delay for delivery"
Now that the answers are balanced I am confident with my choice.
On the other hand I am still hesitating for the wheels: 18" vs 19"?
I red that both exist in silver or darker grey? Is it true? I have seen the 18 in medium grey and the 19" in silver.
bher, imo go for 19's, they set the car off and will help when you come to sell. The ride is a little harder but not as hard as the e46 with 19's.
18's look darker but I've not seen them close up - I suspect they are painted. 19's are two tone (coloured inner edges and polished face - all lacquered). Keep away from kerbs, they will damage easily and the only way to repair them is by machining the face and relacquering. Once damaged, water gets under the lacquer and they go milky.
