Need to change rear diff seals on the in laws 2002 M5 anyone on here done them? im an experianced mechanic and can use the workshop but its not something ive had to do before. The main issue is removel of the shaft from the diff, do i have to remove the backplate to get to locking clips or do they just pop out with a thump. Any help greatly apprieciated.

So no need to call it the rear one then, seeing as there is no "Front diff" option.

A bit like the:-
Front steering wheel.
Front bonnet.
Front head lights.
Rear tail lights.
Rear back seat etc. etc.

Ok i see your point but in my defence most things i work on these days (mainstrem everyday boring stuff)are fwd so anything with a diff at the back is a novelty smile

RWD are getting to be a dying breed, such a shame seeing as they are the most fun.
Hmmm, progress eh.

Can't comment about diff seals on a M5, but they were recently done on my M3 Evo and done by a garage rather than my mate who is a very competent amateur mechanic as he said it was a tricky job without a pit or lift. It cost me £130 with the seals.

Btw, a lot of people really rate Royal Purple diff oil, which I put in mine after the seals were done. Check out Iridium Engineering as they seem to be the cheapest on the web.

Hi Neil. Straightforward enough job. Half shafts pop out with a thump and the main pinion slides out when you undo the big nut! Mark the position of the nut though, otherwise you may overtighten and crush the bearing. No need to remove the back plate.

Oh, and I can definitely recommend Royal Purple, too!

Good work,

where abouts are you? Im sure you could get some work with the M5 boys who need this done...
