Which year for SMG II?

Hey,
as i mentioned before in my other post i'm hunting down the right e46 m3 at the moment. Gonna go with the SMG option, but from which year was it the SMG II? Also is it a massive difference from the early SMG boxes?

All E46s are SMG II, and it is light years ahead of SMG I on the E36.

All E46 M3s that have SMG, will have the SMGII box. The E36 was fitted with the oiginal SMG.
