Having started tracing history for a car im looking at with the chassis number and contacting my local dealer ive only been able to trace from 2003 onwards... the woman at the dealer told me that the system they use was changed and are unable to trace any further back than 03.

Can anyone shed some light on this?

Or is there a more generalised number i can use othere than my local dealer?

If it's been serviced by BMW UK it will be on there data base, all dealers have access to this!

Call BMW Customer services (you'll need reg & chassis number - chassis is best) on 0870 5050160 and ask for a history check. They will tell you where and when the car was serviced in their network then you have to contact the individual garages for the details. It's laborious but worth it is the car is being claimed as FDSH.

When looking at any bmw histroy, just check the service stamps are backed up by reciepts that match the dates and miles etc. If you can get hold of mots too to prove the mileages all match up all the better.

Its easy enough to rob a book out of a car, or make a histroy if you know the rght people, but if youve got the recipts too youre probably ok.
