E30 M3 your impressions please!

Gentlemen,
I think I'm falling in love, last weekend at the Nürburgring I saw 3 in 10 minutes... what makes them so special? I have an article from Classiccars where they compare the chassis with the one from the Caterham... can you confirm that? They even said that the car is "boringly reliable" True?
Who has got one, or owned one? What are your impressions?

E30 M3 is a Legend.
search internet for E30 M3, it gets better reviews than god. !!!
it was a race car which could be used for mundane boring everyday jobs on the roads.
where as most M's nowadays are comfortable everyday cars that can just about cut it going around corners "emulating" a sports car ! ( i kid !)
e30 M3 also was the most succesful touring car ever built ( well until the Vauxhall Cavalier came along LOL )

I've had three which says it all really...I lurve them. I even had a Hartge version H35 (with an M5 engine in) and the chassis coped admirably with 350bhp!
Only downside is left hooker only (unless you get a rhd version which was done by Birds) and a lack of power compared with modern machinery. However on track still marvellous.
I will get another one day i'm sure.

Its a great car, a race car for the road. Under powered by todays standards but the chassis, feel, control and experience are superb. They are reliable, most parts are easy to source and if driven sensibly fule economy isnt too bad but then I dont thnk that should be a consideration when owning these cars as they are meant to be driven hard. LHD isn't a problem, takes a while longer getting used to the dog leg box though.
Well maintained they are ultra reliable, remember the engines were ultimately designed for 24 hour races in a much higher state of tune, so can handle a really good hammering if well maintained.
In terms of what are they like, well if you don't get the feeling that you are driving something special it's either a nail or you just don't get it. In terms of performance, they don't make tons of horsepower so you have to drive them properly, stay away from the middle pedal and use the chassis to maintain speed. Trust me, they are easily fast enough for road use these days. Forget drag races with uber saloons, go to the track and enjoy and realise why people who know rave about them. Fantastic car, period.

I have had 2 now. They are amazing cars. I feel people only understand what the buzz is all about when you have driven one round a track or been passenger. I have been in a higly modified one round the ring and it was untouchable. The only problem is it can be a bit of a compromise if only driven on the road.

On the downside, a standard car with 200bhp is only hot hatch quick now, so mine has differnet cams, airbox, engine management etc which really adds up.
If you like torquey engines, this car is not for you, more like a type r honda in that you need to keep the revs high to make good progress.
On the circuit they have keep up with newer and more powerful cars.
Obvously, if you by one with tired suspension etc, although still probably a surprisingly sweet car to drive, won't live up to the hype - remember thay are 20 years old, so lots of knackered one out there.
I would rather sell my soul than my e30 m3!

I have a track prepared E30 M3 in stock for sale. Weld in multi point cage, Gp N rose jointed suspension, 3.6 diff (motorsport LSD)etc- ring me on 01652 648429 if interested!

Have you posted the car in the classifieds?
On Monday i finally bought a mint 1990 E30 M3 after lusting after one for years. Have done quite a lot of research on them before buying and wont get a proper drive until the weekend but I am not expecting to be disappointed!
In terms of looks just absolutely love it - feel like i have bought a real classic.
Its going to be driven on sunny days and a selected number of track days and trips to Le Mans etc.
Would really like to understand from fellow E30 nuts what engine and brake mods i can make to maximise the trackday experience (once i have got used to it), so any E30 owners out there who can advise, please do so.

Brakes....get Ap's if you can afford them!I had about 5 M3's E30 in my life, for today's driving they need some power you can tune them to 325ps NA or turbo charge them to many more hp, or as I had one Alpina B6S with a 3.5L engine, but the best I had was a E30 M3 with a E36 3.0 M3 engine tuned to 320hp that was really a nice machine and best of both worlds...
