Given the increase in grunt, different nature of the power delivery and general upgrading of the quality and level of interior fittings, options etc. I think at this stage I'd sum the car up by saying think 'shrink wrapped', lighter, defter M5 rather than uprated prev. model M3. Oh, and anyone who thinks that the steering lacks feel is, IMO, confusing lightness with lack of feel and definately WRONG.

In some ways it's mid-way between the two; more grown-up and capable than the E46 M3 (and gone is that raspy highly-strung feel), however it is more urgent, agile and dynamic than the M5.

Good to hear you are enjoying it.

How is it faring initially on the mpg front?

Pugsey - fancy posting some photos? Mine gets delivered a week tomorrow, can't wait. Is the running in 1200 miles at < 5.5k?

Yep, that's well described in a nutshell. Very suprised by the steering. I didn't think it was at all bad when I tried one some time ago but then a few of the mags slated it but I've got to say I'll stick with my original opinion.

Mpg doesn't figure high on my concerns list BUT currently seeing an average of - wait for it - 16 mpg!! That's pretty unforgivable I reckon. God knows what will happen when I start to really up the revs in a week or so.

Even running in you can feel where this car will slay the E46 is on in gear acceleration times. Dawdling in fourth and a gap opens up? Don't drop a gear - just go. Pretty impressive actually and feels as if it'll outrun a 997S once it's loosened up.

Still investigating the various suspension settings and obviously need max revs available before really pushing it but for me default is always going to be 'M' button depressed as a minimum. In completely 'standard' mode the set up is too soft and throttle response too woolley - I can't imagine ever driving it like that - even on a long distance motorway run

Yes, that's what I understand re running in.

If someone can give me a simple step by step - and I mean for IDIOTS - guide to posting pics then I'd love to. Very very pleased with my colour combo. Beware I am a complete techno luddite btw!

Probably the easiest way is to put the photos on a service like http://flickr.com/ and then post a link to it on this topic.

Hmmm..Thanks - I'll give it a go but your talking to someone who is a complete computer, techno numpty. I'll try at weekend - car needs wash first.

Edited to add - enjoy picking your car up!

Had an e46 before this one, and the difference is awesome, haven't looked back in any department, even though I am still running in. Only 300 miles.

That's truly shocking mpg, but I am guessing it will improve with mileage.

This makes me laugh as I can just picture you know trying to get grips with the i-Drive!!!
Personally love it but I have had to tell a mate of mine to give the new X5 a skip as his eyesight is poor and his computing skills are worse!!

How 'big' does the M3 feel when you driving it?
Does it feel apreciably bigger than the e46?

PS: Skip the car wash - M3's always look better covered in grime....

28mpg from a 335d is er, impressive, I assume you do very low local miles with lots of dashes between red lights?

rofl I must admitt that I spent the first day or so trying to ignore that silver dial! After all nearly all of it's really important functions - suspension settings/engine parameters/radio etc can be adjusted with good old fashioned switches and dials on the dash and wheel. However miracle of miracles once I tackled the beast I found it really intuitive to use and I'm a real fan.

Wish I could say the same about the crap paint work - I've seen smoother surfaces on a satsuma frankly.

Feels 'bigger' than the E46 as in more solid, purposeful and 'grown up'. It makes makes the old car seem a bit 'thin' and weedy and even running in the power has a depth to it that the previous car can't compete with. EDC adds an extra layer of adjustability and control which I think will make it pretty easy to turn this thing in to a big sideways yob when you don't just want to go from a to b very quickly with little effort. I have little doubt that this car will be quicker point to point than my 997S was. Flexibilty is hugely improved too which adds to the big car feel.

The interior has moved a whole step forward too IMO and while you don't need them things like the little arms that extend forward automatically from behind you and hand you the seat belts add to the feel good factor. As do the very cool blue lights that illuminate the door handles when you blip the remote to open the car. Some will say very un M car but I say why not have your cake AND eat it.smile

Lovely V8 rumble seems a bit too subdued at the mo. - but then I have still got another 3,500 rpm too go. Not long now!

Does seem to have a drink problem though having now dropped to an average of 15mpg (!) - from memory my longterm E46 Coupe (EVO a few years ago) averaged about 22mpg or something like that. Maybe it'll improve when averaged out over the next few thousand miles - I'll let you know.

MPG in E46 was 25 MPG, but i was doing mostly motorway work straight to office. Now, average is showing 17.9 MPG but increasing. If get to 20 will be well satisfied.

Have to say that interior is 'functional', no frills other than M Dials as the obvious. I have gone for the full leather which I think is pretty good.

I work for a company which used to build aircraft, but now we only support them, but the car has received a lot of positive attention from engineers & designers despite many (on Mtorque) opining to the contrary.

The car feels a lot better built i.e. more solid and taut than the E46, steering more direct (and I haven't yet played with ANY of the toy buttons).

And in running it in and not going above 5000-5500 revs, it def feels better and faster than E46, knowing that this is without full throttle flooring, an extra 3500 RPM where full power delivery is reached and the 'fun buttons'.

I have not looked backto E46, despite it being a brilliant car.

My E92 started with an average of 18.1mpg to the first service, which was a bit of a surprise, as I have recently sold a 745i that did an average of 27mpg on the same htype of journeys.

Pleased to say that the car is now averaging 21.4mpg (according to the onboard computer), but I will check this with a mileage / petrol used sum, as I suspect the computer is a bit of a pessimist.

Car is mega above 6,000 rpm, boys!

Not got to first service yet but mpg now staggered up to 18.5! Looking forward to more revs very soon - at which point mpg will plummet I guess. Mind you I only comment as it's interesting to compare mpgs of old and new. Beyond that I don't give a flying what'sit - tree huggers take note.wink
