Some advice please. Am about to buy an E46 M3 and have read some threads to do with potential things to check. Could anyone elaborate on the following please:
1. Check that the main bearings have been replaced? Was this a recall? Or something carried out under warranty if found faulty?
2. NIKASIL? What is this (Block maybe?), and is it an issue on the E46 M3?
3. VANOS? Again, are there issues with the E46?
Any other things you feel I should know when buying would be very helpful..

Had mine for 3 years now and still loving it!1. Check that the main bearings have been replaced? Was this a recall? Or something carried out under warranty if found faulty?

The bearing should have been done on every car out there by now. The dealer will be able to tell you that
Never heard of Nakasil?
There can be issues with vanos if the car service record isn't tip top, but it is very rare on E46's and if at all only on very high milers
Other things to check are rear springs as these can snap! and Rear trailing arm bushes (RTAB's) as these wear and cause the rear eend to wander alittle! Both are cheap fixes.
Also check the running-in service has been carried out as close to 1200 miles as possible.
2. NIKASIL? What is this (Block maybe?), and is it an issue on the E46 M3?
Was only an issue on the early 328i E36 and some of the early BMW V8's as far as i can remember.
Not an issue with the E46 M3 at all.
And seconded about the coil spirngs snapping, the end of one of mime has gone walkies, its not that expensive to fix though.
Make sure the gearbox is good, there have been some failures, and the diff on the SMG cars.
