Does BMW's tie in with only using Castrol Edge (previously TSW???) hold any weight, or can any quality oil be used..

I use Silkolene Pro - S 10/50 in my Griff instead of the recommeded Mobil 1, so just wanted to know if this was just a quasi-marketing tie-up....

One month of M5 ownership and loving it!

Cheers

BMW recommend Castrol TWS Motorsport 10w60. I believe this is different from Castrol Edge. I'm afraid I'm not willing to take the risk of using anything else.

I buy it for two M cars from a German online supplier and save £3/4 a litre over Main dealer prices:

Cheers Dazren....

I never throw any old rubbish of oil in my cars, but always a bit wary of manufacturer's 'claims' as well.

Thanks also for the linky!

Martin.

.. IMO this is brainwashing. I have used Castrol Edge 10w60 for the last 150,000 miles in my E39 M5. Your car, your choice, but after (almost) 200k and a car that consumes i litre of oil every 700ish miles I know how much money it's saved compared to maindealer prices.

(I buy it from Opie)

Like I said, your car, your choice but someone would have to provide some pretty compelling evidence, that the engine config of the M5 is so wildly different that running Edge is going to be that different to running TWS.. Extraordinary how BMW can charge so much for the TWS oil in the frist place, but that's another story no doubt...

Edge is the same as TWS - different branding or something (Edge being the consumer version).

The important thing is NOT to use Edge Sport. Packaging is very similar, but it isn't meant to be used with M-engines.

Castrol Edge replaced TWS Motorsport. E39 M5s built before March 2000 should use Edge(not Edge Sport) 10w60, cars built after this, with the modified piston rings should use Edge 0w30.
