Hi all, first post in the BMW section (don’t own a BMW at the moment and have a Golf R32 on order).

I was on a road trip in Wales yesterday with my brother when we encountered a white E92 V8 M3 vs a M3 CSL. We were doing what "felt" like a 105mph when they came quickly up behind us and then after a few seconds, proceeded to overtake. The CSL came through first doing what "felt" like a 120mph+ showing good acceleration but then the brand new E92 decided to overtake and as it passed it was going significantly faster, they both continued down the road very swiftly and by the time the corner came up the E92 had caught the CSL. He actually had to get onto the breaks for a second time in order to avoid running into the back of the CSL round the corner (the CSL driver may have been more cautious).

Anyway… We were still making good progress in our Fiesta (don’t laugh) when we came up behind them caught in traffic. We stuck our thumbs up to the guy in the E92 to which he acknowledged with a smile. They both pulled off into a car park and we beeped our horn as we went past and they gave us a wave. We were deliberating whether to turn round and have a chat but decided to carry on our merry way. About 5 mins later after overtaking around 5 cars and 2 low performance motorbikes we were discussing the encounter when suddenly my brother shouts..”No way, he’s behind us!” Sure enough the E92 was on our tail, despite having pulled into a car park and us going very quickly (whilst remaining safe). I don’t know how he caught us so quickly, incredible! He followed us for a couple of minutes before letting rip on a 2 car overtake (us and the car we were trying to pass). It wasn’t safe to overtake in the Fiesta but the M3 made mince meat out of both of us and then disappeared into the distance. It sounded amazing at full chat.

It was a really great experience and capped off our already awesome day driving in Wales. One day I’m going to own an M car.

Worcestershire, West Midlands. May I ask why?

We set off from my house at 8:30am... drove to Worcester, A44 all the way to Rhayader, left onto the A470 down to Builth Wells, right onto the A483 to Llandovery, Lower Rd to Llangadog, left onto the A4069 through the Brecon Beacons National Park and then back home via a different route.

Most of the roads on our trip were VERY enjoyable to drive but the A4069 through the Park is quite simply THE BEST DRIVING ROAD I’VE EVER BEEN ON, it’s amazing! Good road surface, 2 lanes (not too tight), sharp corners, sweeping corners, undulation and visibility is really good so you can take the racing line a lot.

I’ve added a map below for anyone interested in doing the drive.

Can you provide a link to the relevant thread on MTorque please? I'd like to get in touch with them. Cheers, Dave

Not me! I love that road, but although my was in Wales last weekend (at Anglesey), I came home via the M6 and got stopped on the toll road at something above 100mph. Bummer!

New white M3 pulled by dark unmarked Volvo? If so, felt sorry for you as we came past on the toll road. A few minutes earlier and it could easily have been me they were talking to frown

Hello Dave

A friend of mine just told me about this post, as he knows i was in Wales on Saturday. I was driving the White M3. We were looking for somewhere to stop for food, that's why we pulled in, but it was closed. I would say you dont need an R32 the speed that Fiesta was going. We were tanking down that long straight hill and i unexpectedly hit the rev limiter in 4th literally as i was along side you and had to change up and it didnt seem that i was going that much quicker than you.

My friend in the E46 said the same just now. Thats funny you went to Wales for a drive also, we assumed you were locals. We had an awesome day, but sadly my mate got caught on the way home at 95 mph. Police with laser gun in a layby. 3 points and and £60 fixed penalty. It was a shame because although we were pushing on, i thought we were always pretty safe with the driving Saturday.

Enjoyed the burn with your Fiesta too. Best day out driving i have had for some time.

PS. I cant recommend the E92 highly enough. I have had a few M Cars and a few Porsche's including a 996 GT3, and the V8 M3 is by far and a way the best road sports car i have ever had. If i had driven some of the roads that we did Saturday in the BM's, the GT3 would now be parked upside down on a Welsh mountain side.

Hello Dave,

I was driving the "CSL". I will back up VLN1970's comments about your amazing turn of speed in the Fiesta! I had spotted you in the distance some time before we caught you up and was shocked at how long it took to close up.

My car is in fact not a CSL but a normal E46 with the CSL wheels, some suspension mods, exhaust, brakes, and induction stuff. The benefit is it feels and sounds much like a CSL only without the crap gearbox!

The new V8 M3 is amazing, do not believe the stuff in the magazines. It is quite a lot quicker in a straight line than my E46 (as you have seen) and displayed amazing control and stability on the wide range of roads we hit that day. The only downside was it used a third more fuel!

The road on you map is indeed awesome as were many of the other we did. My Run in with the Welsh cops was without doubt the most pleasant I have ever experienced. They got their message over in a clear and professional manner but were never patronizing, we then had a laugh (at my expense).

Let us know when you get the R32 and have it run in, if you fancy a meet up in Wales.

Cheers.

It was actually my brother driving at that time, he’s going to love you for saying you don’t need an R32 if you have that Fiesta, he thinks no one can deal with “Fiesta Power” lol. It’s only a 1.5L Diesel but it corners like it’s on rails despite being standard (to our knowledge).

Yeah, we’re both big car enthusiasts and thought it would make for a good day out. We’ve never driven the roads before and were mightily impressed. Sorry to hear about the Police. I guess you can’t really argue but I wish we lived in a country where discretion and judgment were the order of the day. It can be perfectly safe to travel at that speed, especially in high performance cars like M3’s. Speed doesn’t kill, poor driving does!

So did we! My brother can’t believe a guy in a new M3 is saying how much he enjoyed the “burn” with his Fiesta. You’ve made his evening.

Interesting to hear those comments, I always respect owner’s opinions. I’m a big Porsche fan, have my eyes on a Carrera S at some point in the future (Turbo if my career goes according to plan). Definitely also want an M3/M5 at some point.

Ha, thanks chap, we were giving it full beans to stay with you but you guys were just too quick. I bet it was quite surprising/amusing to see a shopping trolley caning it down the road ;-)

It looked really good, very mean. Do you go to track days then? If so where do you recommend? It’s something we’re looking into as it’s not often possible to explore a cars full potential on the road.

Yeah, we could tell it was quicker, not a stupid amount but there was definitely a visible difference. A 3rd more fuel is a hell of a lot but I personally don’t worry about fuel consumption (hence buying an R32).

The A4069 was the best road we drove on, absolutely brilliant. The A44 was also really good considering how long it goes for. Sorry to hear about you getting caught, at least they were pleasant about it. I have never been caught to date (god knows how) but I would like to think if you show respect/decency they will too.

Sounds great, I’d be up for that in the future. My car arrives at the end of Nov so maybe Q1 next year. I’m planning on doing a few mods, maybe take it up to around 300BHP N/A. Still no match for you boys though ;-)

Thanks for taking the time to post on here, glad to hear we had a positive impact on your day, you certainly had a positive one on ours. Congrats to both of you on awesome machines!

Keep in touch.

Cheers
Dave

I am very happy to hear how impressive the M3 is (I am waiting for a DSG version next year).

But I am a bit surprised that you chaps are happy to drive on public roads at speeds which would get you locked up if you were unlucky enough to get caught - and even more surprised that you are happy to talk about it on a public forum. I suggest more trips to the Eiffel mountains.
