I had a fascinating tussle with a 911 Turbo (997) out of the stalls on the M6 toll road the other day.

We sat next to each other and floored the throttles simultaneously.
In a 1000bhp cacophony we both went streaking off neck and neck.

At about 60mph (difficult to say exactly as it all happened rather fast!) he lunged forward and pulled infront of me though.
I was left bouncing off the red limiter feeling rather trounced.

I have to say I've never seen anything move so fast.

Still, very enjoyable and he smiled and waved a few miles later when he pulled off (the b####d!!!)

Have any of you had any particularly memorable traffic light grand prix?

I once out pedalled (I was on my BMX at the time!) a gorgeous Ferrari 308 (from Magnum era) away from a set of traffic lights back in the 1980's - does that count ?!?!?

The driver was pi**ing himself laughing, and after waving out of the roof he floored it down the road... no wonder I grew up addicted to cars! smile

just shows you how fast 911 turbos really are.

It could just be a Tiptronic vomit which, although an old technology torque convertor, has some sort of launch control, so it requires no particular skill to press the pedal to the floor and hold on.

The 997 turbo is considerably faster than the M5 and M6. Theres a nice video on youtube to prove it.

I think 4WD, more torque and less weight has more to do with it:

997TT is 680Nm torque from 1,950 to 5,000rpm, 1660kg and 4WD

M5 is 520Nm peak torque at 6100rpm, 1,855kg and RWD

Doesn't matter if it's a Tip or Manual - the 997TT is significantly faster off the line.

yes, the 997 is significantly quicker. The 996 is significantly slower.

I was making reference to corners in general rather than specific M6 based corners.

This thread is about straight line speed. I wouldn't sugest the M5 could beat any recent 911 when corners have a significant influence. Having come from CSL to M5, I am very much aware of the penalty of its bulk.

Agreed. M5 much quicker straight line though. With baby now here the E60 M5 looks more and more tempting for me when the 911 goes. General peformance of the car and A/B road ovetaking ability is fantastic. I am slightly concerned I might not find it as fun to drive as the 911.

I drove an M5 just after i sold my 993tt...the m5 is a really nice car to be in with great straight line speed,a great engine, and imo looks excellent. However it does feel huge when you are driving it and around country lanes felt quite a handful and not very agile...gearbox is also still horrible to use(no better than it was in my CSL)and the diff clunk is still very noticeable..an m5 was on my buylist along with the new m3...i settled for an rs4 in the end.

Next time the Thames Valley crowd organise a run to the mountains I'll be happy to demonstrate the mountain road capability's of an M5... Spent last weekend in the Brecons and Black Mountains with a group and I can safely say the M5 held it's own! evil

I'd say that if you go into the M5 with your eyes open, you won't be disappointed. If you come form something more agile, you will know to expect something so big to be less fun to chuck around, but it is still amazingly good for a car of that size (I tested the B5 too and that felt much bigger). The acceleration goes a long way to making up for the cornering fun penalty.

I'm happy with SMG, although the CSL had a quicker box. Ifind that the diff clunk only really happens, like on the M3, when I drive without much mechanical sympathy and it doesn't bother me.

I do find myself thinking a lot about buying something smaller to go with it, but it would be pure self-indulgence. Now, if I could persuade my wife to use the M5 as her car (after an intensive anti-wheel-kerbing course), then I could buy myself a CSL, R8 or GT3.....

I have enroled my wife on this course prior to letting her drive my old 330, old M3 and current 911. All three attempts to moderate her wheel killing behaviour have failed. I have now bought her an X5 which has given her the confidence to hit the kerb even harder.
