Bloody hell, I didnt know the advert was banned!

I remember seeing it on the tube many moons ago

They're (whoever is responsible for banning this kind of thing) are going way over the top with this censorship bollox...I mean come on, its a clever little ad and well worth the air time but nooooooo

The censors tend to think that we'll all believe it really is that fast and we'll go try it out on the M6

Get a fecking grip

Was the Lotus Carlton really faster than an M5? Thought the M5 was good for almost the double ton? Didn't think the old Lotus Carlton was quite that quick? (Also, at the time the M5 ad' was done, they probably no longer made the Lotus)

Oh I dont know, I wasnt really serious but the Carlton topped out at 175mph if I remember & the M5 I guess is limited to 155.

Good advert & shame its banned, it makes me wonder if I still want to be part of this new world. If they consider ad's like this to encourage speeding dangerous driving, what happens if the weak minded people who they feel may be effected suddenly walk in to an arcade & play Grand theft auto. Will they suddenly start nicking cars?

I've been lucky enough to be in both a Lotus Carlton and an M5 with the V block getting a good caning. In all honesty, the BMW was definately faster. However, the Lotus Carlton felt faster, and was so much more visceral. If it was a 'second car' descision, I'd have the Lotus over the BMW any day of the week. And I say that as a BMW fan.

The Lotus Carlton is just so of its time, so out there bonkers for the period when it was built, you've got to love it.

That would have been much better if they hadn't bothered with all the camera car stuff, just had the same footage, then an M5 come flashing past and overtake, no sweat, no fuss, no comment, end clip.

Presumably with the BMW driver flashing the prototype out of the way and not signalling back in afterwards? wink

The E34 M5 was speed limited to 155mph, unlimited it would do 170mph (some guys from M5board GPS tested a 3.8L version), so the Carlton would be slightly faster.

The E34 is more contemporary to the Lotus Carlton than the E39 which came much later on.

Really though the more direct opponent for the Lotus Carlton was the Alpina B10 BiTurbo, it could nudge 180mph making it a smidge faster than the Carlton and was released and finished production about the same time.

I think the E39 does about 185mph or thereabouts if derestricted, the current E60 M5 is claimed to do 205mph when derestricted.

Most of these 'banned' adverts are simply viral adverts built by very clever marketing teams, paid a lot of money, to kid everyone into thinking they were banned, and to get everyone talking about the product they are trying to push...
