Does it require any modifications?

Is it anymore reliable???

Vanos removal.

Ive heard of kits about that remove the vanos but dont know what they consist of and can the cams be locked into place ie, 282 degrees i believe and blanked off.

vacmotorsport offer a vanos blanking kit??? any experience of them?

will the ECU throw all its toys out the pram and refuse to work?

Im thinking of buying a evo, but the dreaded vanos is bothering me..alot

Thanks for your help

Don't know the interchangability of the E46/E36 Vanos units so can't help you there.
Apparently there are some indies/specialists who'll overhaul or service/exchange VANOS units so I guess it doesn't have to be a main dealer shafting if you're caught out with a failure.

I wouldn't look to get rid of it that's for sure, it's there for a reason! I recently bought an Evo Cab and viewed a few cars, several of them seemed to have rattly (very) Vanos units and also didn't have the sensation on coming "on cam" at 2500rpm. I chose one that wasn't noisy and you can feel it definitely picking up at 2 1/2 so hopefully it will be a while until I have to plunge any dough into fixing the unit on my car.

I don't see it as an issue worth loosing sleep over, choose well when you buy and keep a bit of money to one side as a Vanos fund if it bothers you that much.

The VANOS issue is far too over publicised. There are masses of cars out there that have no problems at all. It's mainly down to how well a car has been maintained. Was is warmed gently when cold etc etc.

Rule of thumb vanos check is to open the bonnet, get close to the front of the engine then get someone to rev the car to 2.5k and then release. If the engine makes an audible brrr rrr rrrr type sound from the front then maybe the vanos has a problem. One I looked at did and I left alone. The one I've bought is silent as a mouse.

Another thing to look out for that Evo prospective buyers don't neccessarily know about is the gearbox. They all rattle a bit when cold so don't let a little rattle from the underneath put you off.
