The BMW M5 has long been considered king-of-the-hill when it comes to high-performance large sedans. But with new entrants like the Mercedes E 63 and upcoming Audi RS6, BMW's crown has been challenged. To combat the M5's newest competitors, it appears as though BMW will offer a turbocharged version of its V10 powered car.

Photographers spotted an M5 prototype out for testing that had a few variations from the current car. On the front bumper are two additional air inlets. Also, there appears to be a gap between the kidney-shaped grill and the hood, indicating a taller engine profile from the current M5. Perhaps the biggest giveaway to what lies beneath the hood is what appears to be an intercooler in the lower portion of the car's front fascia. No details are known but the turbo M5 would no doubt equal or exceed the RS6's 580 horsepower.

Rumors are also circling that BMW is developing an M treatment for its next-generation 7-series. Recent photographs of the 7-series prototype reveal an air intake at the front hood as well as two air outlets at the back of the hood — neither were seen on previous versions of the 7-series prototype.
Interesting. If true maybe they really are getting serious in the power wars.

I can't help wondering if they will make the next M3 'CSL' a turbo model to compete with the upcoming RS5.

I hope not, but IMHO the priority on any new M5 is a larger fuel tank!

i certainly hope so. The idea of a turbo'd ///M would suggest that the quest for power/weight had been forgotten about.

the M5 engine is according to rumours fed by M GmbH so good that they can get a lot more power out of it without forced induction. They apparently had it revving much, much higher on the test benches. It would obviously cost a lot more, but I would imagine that refining of component tolerances and, perhaps in some cases, change of materials, might make the engine reliable enough to be allowed out into production with a silly rev limit.

It's not all about BHP though. Go drive a new RS6 when they are around then drive a M5.

And you will realise that the monster torque of the RS6 is much easier to live with on a daily basis? evilwink

Well it's in the latest Evo email newsletter thing as well, with some new photos, so I doubt it's a photoshop. Doesn't specifically mention a turbo though.

As these exclusive spy-shots seem to prove, BMW is apparently responding to Audi’s all-new RS6 which was officially launched at the Frankfurt Show last week.

Closer examination of the photos reveals additional mesh-covered air-intakes in the front bumper to satisfy the upgraded V10-engine under the bonnet. Rumours suggest it is going to be pushed to no less than 575 bhp – still 10 horsepower less than the new Audi flagship but a massive increase over the 507 bhp of the current M5.

The photographer who delivered the spy-shots reports about a much more aggressive and somewhat lower sound and is sure to have heard the car was equipped with the new DSG transmission rather than the SMG used for M5s so far.
