Button is located below climate control unit.

Urban myth though that it gives more "boost". All it does is sharpen the throttle response and give more feeling through the steering by giving it more weight.

The E60 though gives the extra 100bhp to take it up to 500bhp where as the E39 only has a miserly 400bhp regardless of whether the button is on or not.

I thought without the Sport button on the car ran at around 320 to 340bhp and only 400 when on?

All E39 M5s have the sport button regardless of age. There is definately no increase in power with the sport button on, although the sharper throttle response can make the car feel a bit faster, particularly in the middle of thre rev range.

I rarely use it, it all seems a bit frantic to me with the sport button on, or maybe I'm just getting old.

Dynoed M5's with sport on and off, it makes no difference to the actually power curve.

when i had my E39 M5 i couldnt understand why the sport button was there as easily drivable ON all the time, unlike CSL sport button whihc makes you kangaroo down the road first thing in the morning!

And with a 1200rpm idle and a Supersprint exhaust backfiring at 7am, the neighbours don't need an alarm clock!
