I dorve my friends M5 yesterday which he bought after my recomendation, going from a 911 turbo. I loved it, so much so that I would like to chop my Range Rover Sport in for a used one as they are now available for 45-50k.

having done a ton of money on my Z4M, I want to go used on the M5.

anything in particular I should look for or avoid?

My only preference would be to not have interlagos if possible as the Z4M is that colour.

for clarification, I am talking about the latest M5 ( dont know which e it is)

Yes, it is a sublime vehicle.

Permission to humbly suggest you get an M6 instead? (Sorry hehe.)

Unless you need storage space inside the car for long trips and you have sprogs under 5' tall then it needn't be an issue: the boot's pretty much similar volume as t'saloon.

but if the driver is over 6' tall, there is no, repeat no legroom in the back.

I bought a used M5 and would've had an M6 as, used, they aren't significantly more expensive.
I've got three kids though (three belts in the back of an M5) so that was the end of that comparison.

I've done 14,000 in 3 months beleive it or not, with virtually no problems.
It uses a little oil (but there's no dipstick - the computer tells you; great for a mechanical incompetent like me).

There've been a couple of gremlins with the i-drive freezing and a couple of times the computer has spuriously reported a gearbox fault.
Apart from that - no problems.
First service due next week, but it should only be a couple of hundred quid.

Only two downsides as far as I can see - it sounds like a diesel when you start it up and it averages 18.7mpg - other than that - fantastic!

The dealer says they wear mileages well.
I'll tell you at the end of next year - it'll be on about 90,000 by then...

That´ll be the E60 M5. Title upgraded accordingly.

Suggest driving both the M5 and The M6. I´ve had 5k drivng the E60 M5 and then drove derestrictor´s M6 last month. Ignore the press. There is a difference, the M5 is a great compromise, the M6 is the better handling car.

DAZ

Note. Check if necessary, the car has an updated SZL sensor and the gearbox sensors are OK (Early cars had problems which BMW made updated parts for).

OK, you own one, but I've been in a few and I'd love to know where you conjure up the rear legroom from. There isn't a huge amount behind me in the M5 and I'm only 6'2" (and my seat [i]is [/]properly adjusted biggrin).

Well, I just sacrifice a little of the front space et voila, kids in the back, no problemo.

Sure, they can kick the back if they get a bit tetchy which wouldn't happen so readily in the saloon but once you're past the sense of claustrophobia(hehe) it really isn't that big a deal.

Not saying it's as practical internally as the saloon just way short of hopeless as per most GT 2+2s.

Having said that, I did oggle an M5 (E60) yesterday, parked up: they are bloody nice beasties...
