Hi,
Am thinking of buying a Z3M Roadster as I'm not getting on with my Chimaera and it seems like a good option. Its still a 2 seater, I can have the hood down on the 3 days of sun we get in a year and they seem reasonably quick.
I've got c£12k to play with on this so I know I'm going to be looking at the 98-99 models, do these come with traction control/ABS etc as standard or was it only an option? I know a friend who has a '97 2.8 and it did but was it also on the M? Also what are they like to drive and live with? I appreciate the servicing won't be cheap as its an M car (but then its not been on my TT, 4Motion and certainly wouldn't be on my Chim) and I've read about the (potential) problems with the VANOS system, is there much else that can commonly go wrong with these?
The reason I'm falling out with my Chim is that I've come to realise that its a car that I can only really drive/enjoy when the weather allows (yes, a couple of moments have been a bit ) and not when I want to (and need to go somewhere) I take it the Z3M is better?
Cheers,
El.
P.S. I guess I'm also saying if anyone fancies selling theirs...

I'm sure someone more knowledgeable will be along shortly, but iirc only the very last-in-line (S54, 2001/02?) Z3MCoupes came with traction and stability control fitted - all the earlier cars had little or no electronic aids. I expect the same is true of the Roadster... The S54s also came with the engine from the E46 M3, which I believe suffers less from VANOS issues than the earlier E36-engined models.
The later S54 engined cars (only 79 RHD built) had traction control. The earlier S50 engined didnt.

Friend has a z3m, he's 6'1" and has no problem. He does have a problem with the 'WANLI' tyres the previous owner had just put on. Wanli tyres+no traction control =
Make sure there's good tyres on.
The only other thing is his front end feels light in the bends when he's giving it some. He thinks a strut brace would be the only really usefull mod'.
Other than that it's a mint car and doesn't do bad against my E46 M3!
