Hi Guys, I am meant to be going to France tomorrow in my E30 M3, however, it seems to have developed a rumbling noise. I think it is coming from the steering? If I drive at around 30-40 the rumbling starts and if I turn the steering wheel slightly left to right it seems to go away and come back as I turn it. When I stop the car there is quite a stink coming from underneath the car.

Does any one have any ideas what it is and ultimately should I be driving down to Poole from Sheffield and then around Brittany??

I would normally pop it round to my local specialist but they are not available.

Kind regards

David

Could be a seized caliper. After a drive, carefully check the tempreture of the front wheels. If one is hotter that the other you have found your problem.

or excessive break dust on one wheel. Ive had similar problems once was a caliper the other was some bushes on anti roll bar or somewhere similar, cant remember exactly but it sorted it.

Thank you, that would seem to make sense actually. That would explain why the brake light stays on sometimes I guess? My local garage could not suss out why it was staying on (I guess I will take it elsewhere from now on).

Will it cause it any damage if I take it on the trip? I am keen to take it on a long run.

Kind regards

To be honest I would'nt take it anywhere until its fixed if it's a dodgy caliper. Your warp the disc, loose breaking ability and have massive steering pull to on side or other.

Thank you very much, I will obviously heed your valuable advice. To be honest, I had sort of made my mind up not to take it, it was just wishful thinking on my part, hoping it might be Okay.

As soon as I get back I will drop it in to our local specialist 'Quarry Motors' and get them to give it a thorough going over. I have no experience of them but they have been recommended and they are local.

Kind regards

Welcome Dave, better to be safe than sorry especially where breaks are involved, best get it checked out. The problem might only be showing it's self when the breaks are hot so this could be a reason why the garage missed it.
