E39 M5 or E46 M3???

Good morning chaps. As per the title - with entry level for both these cars within a whisker of each other, I was just wondering in which direction the majority (if such a thing even exists on Pistonheads) of people would be drawn? My dad is considering a venture into M territory, with the car being employed essentially as a weekend / occasional trackday toy. Decided against posting in general gassing lest the thread become riddled with Cerbera / Griffith suggestions - NZ's tight import laws simply wouldn't allow it.

I would go for the E46 M3 if you want something for weekend fun, some light track work and reasonable running costs. However if the car is going to be used as a road car and space is an issue for social events the M5 with decent brake pads is the way to go.
