Find it hard to believe cars in this price bracket would command much of a premium (?) but I notice a few hopefuls are already coming out of the woodwork!

Well they're at a discount in LHD form so hopefully that bodes well for the speculators here...

There were a couple of folk in classifieds here advertising places on the waiting list - anyone know how they got on?

I ordered one of the first previous model M3's which I sold for a premium. Did the same with the new M5. I ordered both cars with the intention of using them but for different reasons (M3 not available in 4 dore & M5 too expensive to run) decided to sell for a premium.

I got about £2000 for each of them and have no trouble sleeping at night.

I have also ordered a new M3 Convertable which I may or may not keep - offerscool

It's just business, supply & demand baz - live with it.

I have no problem with the business aspect of this...but suspect that it's not worth the hassle and risk if all you're going to make is a couple of grand. And I think there's a big chance here that no ones going to make anything except BMW. They will up supply if the demand is there, so I don't think the speculators will get much of a look in.

I fully acknowledge your contention. However, in my opinion, I would assert that the financial merits of such 'business' are rather futile. Instant £2k return on £40-60k is pocket change and not worth the hassle imo. This is to be expected on any mass-produced consumer good.

Of course, genuinely rare/atypical/limited production vehicles a la Enzo et al. are most worthy of such investment and 'business'. In comparison, symbollically, a contemporary M car has a similar 'commodity value' as to that of a loaf of bread IMO.

I only paid £2000 deposit for each of the cars (initial £250 which had to be topped up on 'specking' the car. The guys I sold to paid me for my deposit and the premium. The return is actually very good but yes there is an element of risk.

I may go for the new M3 Convertable depending on costs. If not I will probably settle for a 335.

Oh right - things must have changed...the last time I asked about going on a waiting list (this was for a new M3) the dealer wanted a £2000 deposit on the spot, and this was 2 years before the car was due. I guess the dealers probably differ in their approaches...

I think your situ is slightly different though, BC...you appear to put an order down thinking that you might keep it...when I talk about speculators, I mean people who never intend to take delivery of the car and just want to make a profit.

All depends on your relationship with your dealer I guess. I don't pay anything to go on my dealers list, then £500 on speccing. Used to be £1k but got him down recently. I have bought a fair few cars from him (about £500K) over the years and never let him down.

Not speculating, but placed my order last September hoping to keep the car for a year and not lose my shirt and trousers. Now dealer is saying it won't arrive til 09. I thought an order placed Sept 06 would mean that I got a car mid 08. Thoughts?

I placed an order with £1000 deposit in July 2005 and could have had the first car after the demonstrator, which would be built in September, but I have chosen to delay my order and try the demonstrator first. You will probably find people ahead of you drop out (like me) and your car arrives earlier than first quoted.

I also think dealers may quote long delivery times to keep up the myth of huge demand and also be able to give you good news when they manage to acquire your car earlier.

By 09 you'll certainly be losing your shirt IMO, might be able to keep the trousers though, time will tell, if the depreciation is a concern and i'm assuming for you it is, it might be more prudent to wait and see what happens, you have plenty of time

All very well to ask, but does anyone know of a slot that's actually been SOLD for a premium?

A friend has recently sold his slot. £1k premium for car arriving Q4 '07. This was to a car 'sourcer' who I presume will put something on top of that.

I think your friend has been very lucky.

I simply surrendered my slot.

My friend who put his name down two months ago and was told early 08 has just had a call promising October delivery. They asked for £3k deposit and spec.

He's cancelled.

Why? If he genuinely wanted a car he should have been thrilled! Odd reaction IMO.
