hi, ive had a bit of bad luck i bought my M3 just on thursday and on the way home a stone flew up and chipped my windscreen, im quite sure it can be repared but would prefer to have a whole new windsreen fitted. does anyone know how much a new windscreen fitted would cost as the excess on my insurance is pretty high so would need to pay for it without going through them.

Around 350-400 pounds, more if it's climate comfort. From memory the standard screen alone is around 190 from BMW.

High excess? Because you have a commercial / fleet policy or are you getting it confused with voluntary excess for TPFT claims?

If you are comprehensively insured, with a private policy, your policyholder contribution (windscreen/glass excess) should be between £40 and £100. Most policies carry a £50 or £60 xs.

As for the stonechip, if it's smaller than a penny coin, it can be repaired and as long as it isn't in your direct line of vision, I recommend that you have it repaired by a specialist (like me biggrin). Again, if you have fully comp ins, the repair will be FOC.

In the event of any glass replacement you can call in a specialist (like me biggrin) and have it changed, but if you have FC, pay your XS; it works out you'll only be paying a fraction of the full price.

There are a few screens to choose from:

Green tinted;
Green with top tint;
Clear with green top tint and solar coating;
Rain sensor hardware... etc etc...

You can tell by looking at the screen around the rear view mirror attachment, there is a gap in the coating if it's climate comfort. To make totally sure call your local BMW dealer, quote your registration, they will be able to tell you the spec of your car.

I'm with Direct Line, they will only pay for RAC or Autoglass to replace the screen. BUT, you can ask them to get the screen and seals etc direct from BMW.
