Well folks,

After wrestling with torque steer for long enough, Ive seen the light and bought myself a proper car wink

Approximately 18 months ago, I set out to buy myself an e36 M3 but with the budget I had, every one I went to see was tired at best. So I gave up. Resigned to the fact that I'd never get a good one, I went and bought another swift hatchback and replaced that with an even swifter hatchback.

Then, out of the blue, I had an offer for my car which I accepted (I wont bore you with the details of why I wanted to sell it) and thus, a replacement was saught and the hunt began. I needn't have looked very hard though as lo and behold, what should crop up on the classified pages in this very site?

This little beauty:

One-off re-trim in silver suede and black nappa leather...

...and the best bit:

So, after resigning to the fact that I'd never get a good one, I've bought what is quite possibly the cleanest M3 in the country. unfortunately I dont have a picure of the underside of the car, but it is spotless!

So there we go. just thought I'd introduce myself to you lot wavey Look forward to hopefully meeting some of you.

ETA: Incidently, the sun-strip is removeable and wont be staying on for much longer

Very nice, I'm looking at a very similar model this Wednesday, hopefully. Very similar but with alcantara Msport trim, and 60 something thousand on the clock. Same colour too.

Great choice, and super condition car!

How dos it drive, and how does it compare to your RS? I am in a similar position, moving on from an Integra Type R.

Well for a start, it feels (excuse the cliche`) like it is hewn from granite.

Both cars have covered a similar mileage, but the focus' interior rattles and creaks like an old shed, whereas the bimmer feels impossibly well put together. Being a young 'un interior quality didn't bother me, but having seen and felt the M3 I dont hink I could go back!

Secondly, you can tell the money has been spent on the engine. Torquey as anything with a huge thump in the back after 5k rpm. Oh and what a noise!

Mine has had bilstein struts and Eibach springs fitted, so it's a good deal sharper to drive than standard. I would recomend this upgrade. Car still rides beautifully, but the turn in is almost imediate. Not quite RS levels but pretty close.

As for pace; suffice to say it is brisk, but It's difficult to compare it with the RS as the power is deliverd in a completely different way - plus it is more refined, but it is probably a good deal quicker - especially so from 80+.

Coming from your 'Teg, the Low down torque will shock you. I had a shot of a DC5 recently, and the lack of low-end grunt spoiled it for me, especially as the DC5 is a good bit heavier than the DC2. Still the S50 will spin right up to 7,500rpm as sweetly as the vtec, but without the ON/OFF delivery.

Just dont expect it to be as focussed. The 'Teg is legendery for the way it changes direction and with the M3 being almost half as heavy again, you have to bear this in mind when driving it hard. It feels like a much bigger and heavier car, but it can still be hustled. Oh, and it's rear wheel drive biggrin

Have you checked out all the vanos issues? Make sure the one you are looking at has had the vanos recall and has evidence of the vanos filter being replaced at least every service. Many people i've spoken to suggest that the reason for the vanos failures is due to this £4 filter not being replaced with the oil. If the seller looks at you like you've got four heads when you mention VANOS, walk away!

The only point of note, aside from VANOS

The 6 spd boxes are no longer supported spares wise - most common failure is 2nd gear synchro.

Go easy on the box wink

Cheers for that. I like what I hear!

I have read quite a bit on these forums, and for the cash the M3 looks like the best option for a swop. The 'Teg is a hoot on the right roads, but motorway drives are a chore, especially whilst chatting, as it isn't the quietest car. I'm hankering after something quicker, rwd and with more than 4 cylinders, and a touch of refinement.

The M3 I'm after had a new Vanos unit at the last service, and has full BMWSH and looks pretty clean. This will be the first I look at, so will make sure my head is screwed on. They are prepared to take the Honda as a p/x, so it will cost me a couple of grand to upgrade.

cheers for the info. Alastair.

One more q, do your rear seats fold down? From the pics of the car i'm looking at, they have a split from the boot side. This is pretty essential to me as I carry guitars and amps, mountain bikes etc...

cheers for the info. Alastair.
I'm not sure that they do actually and I didnt actually check! IIRC from the 318is I've been it a few times, they dont fold down but I could be wrong.

The boot is however, much bigger than you would imagine.
