IIRC it is a chain...?

As above, when should it be replaced, or does it need replacing?

Im looking at a mint e36 M3 '98 with only ~30k miles on the clock. It has a full and comprehensive BMWSH but I cannot see specific evidence of the chain being done. I'm not sure whether it needs it though?

Any help much appreciated.

Cheers,

Simon

The S50 has a camchain, they pretty much last the life of the engine.

I think chains are generally every 120k miles

In theory it'll last forever.

Think most people change the tensioner at 120K mark - give Munich Legends a call and see what they recommend.

I`ve worked for BMW for 10 years, and we have never changed a single one. They will last as long as the engine...

It's a duplex chain (2 chains running next to each other)on the e36 motor. They last for the life of the engine. I would check for Vanos noise over cam chain noise, it's more likely to give trouble. Do a search on "Vanos" it's been talked about alot.
