Yes, the new M3 is quick...........Autobahn encounter
Discussion
Was driving from munich to regensburg (which is 80miles of derestricted autobahn) in my Mk5 R32 golf, when i could see in my rear view mirror Xenons closing in on me (i was going pretty fast in the outside lane, maybe 225kmh or so). Then i spot the "aero" mirrors of the new M3- and think, "God dayum, commuting SHOULD not be this fun!"
So i pull in, as obviously he is faster, and he blasts past, sadly at this speed i couldnt lower the window to try and hear the sound of the V8...
So for the next 50miles i followed him, he was a bit confused no doubt when i did manage to come alongside him in one of the short 120kmh zones and gave him a multitude of thumps up and waves, but soon smiled and gave me thumbs up back.
So from following the m3 ill give some of my impressions.
Its quick. I believe he remained in 6th the whole time during our encounter, and even though i was ringing the R32s neck (itself no slouch, whilst chasing the m3 i managed 255kmh on the GPS) and he effortlessly pulled away quite a large margin.
It is very good looking, when you see it in your rear view mirrors, you definitely move over: The bonnet bulges and the flaired wheel arches are just right, its more lithe than the E46.
The car sits really well on the autobahn, on the route there are some high speed sweepers and though i was a quite a bit behind the m3 (for safety reasons and cos i couldnt keep up), the m3 looked very planted even over the odd bump and undulation.
If anyone has one on order, congrats its a great car. Next time i need to be in one of the rufs...
Best,
adam

Nice try... but we all know it's fat, heavy, the rear wheels are in the wrong place, it's thirsty, it's not as good as an RS4, not as good as the last M3, hasn't got enough torque to pull the skin off a cocoa, it's driven by posers and the 135i will be a better car by far. So i pull in, as obviously he is faster, and he blasts past, sadly at this speed i couldnt lower the window to try and hear the sound of the V8...

Best of all... it's one of the only cars in the world that you know all this BEFORE you drive it.
I have to say I'm looking forward to getting behind the wheel of one of these to see what they are like.
Until I've actually driven one, I won't make any judgements.
It's an M3 after all, I know BMW seem to be losing the plot somwhat when it comes to their new cars and the vast array of models they are launching, but at the end of the day they are catering to the wider market that is going to make them all that lovely folding. Not just a small core bunch of petrol head nutters like us lot.
Isn't it only a few kilos heavier (as in somthing like 10kgs) than the old E46 M3?

I thought that before i saw it blasting past me at 150mph...Best of all... it's one of the only cars in the world that you know all this BEFORE you drive it.

This story also gives the lie to the line so often repeated on PH by the likes of vh defending speed limits and by the anti-German brigade that long stretches of high speed driving on the Autobahn are a myth.
I had the pleasure of owning my first M3 in Germany and had plenty of experience of long stretches of 240 km/h+ cruising. I was over with the M5 a few months ago and had the opportunity to get to know the car's astonishing acceleration at speeds over 200 km/h. If only it were not speed-limited....

Myth my arse.I worked in Salzburg for a year, and usually drove there and back in my chosen mount at the time - a tuned Calibra Turbo (to 340bhp).
It is/was possible to do Salzburg-Calais in around 7 hours (700 miles approx) if the conditions and traffic were right.
The average speed of 100mph could only be achieved by being able to spend several hours on the E60, E52 and E50 absolutely flat-out. (which was a lot in a car like that)
Well done, Adam.
I always enjoy your 'bahnsperiences, such an essential tonic for those of us bumbling along with clipped wings c/o the pathetic, luddite scum who are ruining the UK.
However, until we've enjoyed a short period of societal 'adjustment' via hopefully, a suitably disposed military junta and the desperate reduction in our chronic overpopulation density issues, we will only be able to peer like starving orphans at this automotive table of plenty.
Ze Germans should never surrender this outstanding liberty: the right to hoon free.

AdamT. Since you have actually witnessed the new M3 in action then, together with the few who have driven one, you have absolutely no right what so ever to have or express an opinion on it let alone post on here. Kindly leave that sort of thing to the hoards of people on here who have absolutely no idea what they are commenting on!
