New 135i Coupe instead of a new M3?
Discussion
Without a real LSD will the 135i really be any kind of succesor to a real M Car?
I know they have said 'no M1 because the 135i is fast enough' but M cars are not just about outright speed right? I know they have a problem in making it anymore powerful-the 3litre twin turbo being plenty quick already- but don't you think that there is scope for CSL or M version with the same engine but more focused chassis, drivetrain etc? If the really pitching this car at peaple who don't want such a big M3 then surely they need to give it harder edge?
Just by the way, I am interested to know why you have decided against the new M3 - have you had a drive?

Can anybody tell me why BMW don't put LSD's on their more powerful cars anymore?
Is it to do with the fact that they have all the stability and traction control systems instead?
Top end E28's, E30's, E34's etc. all had an LSD to help get the power down nicely. I think it's a shame they don't offer this anymore.

No, I'm sure the car will be great.I'm being a financial wimp. I've been scared off by M6 owners losing £30k in their first year and Z4M owners losing £15k in the first three months!
I just don't think an M3 can sustain a £55k (inc essential options) price tag and I don't want to take a £20k+ hit over two years.
Hey Duetscher..you not being a financial wimp-just crteative with the finances!
Until I am seriously and disgustingly rich I doubt I will be buying cars off the showroom unless its a keeper for a good few years. The depreciation just hurts too much otherwise.
Depreciation wise I think you be burned even more (in percentage terms) by the 135i over two years. Remember, most bemmers are bought by badge snobs and not for the dynamics etc. So when faced with the choice of the 135i or sport specced but slower 3 series I think they will go for the 3 as it has more kudos thus hurting sales of the 135i, new and used.IMO most people percieve the 1 as a car for wannabe beemer owners, and not being helped by its looks, the depreciation is is really bad.
I suspect the 135i will be a cracking buy in a year or two.
I'm sure you have been told this before but what about a nice E46 M3 or CSL? A Z4MC too small?

That's what I've got! It's just that I've had it since new five years ago and great as it is (and it really is great), I fancy a change. You are obviously very happy indeed with the M3 having kept it for 5 years. I suppose the question is will you be as happy with a 135 to keep it that long?
Ask yorself this-do you find that most of the time the M3 is bit too hard edged for what you use it for? Do you find the ride too much, the engine too peaky, the note to raspy, the responses too sharp, the diff too agressive? If 'most of the time' the answer is yes than something softer like the 135 will probably be spot on.
It sounds like the 135 will be a great small car with a grown up feel though. With all that torque, in 'real world' driving it will likely be quicker than the M most of the time. I think its a bit smaller than the e46 but heavier but the interior on the 1 is cosy and feel like a much smaller, more chuckable car from the seating psition. However, I am sure if you go on track you will be lefting wanting compared with an M car.
Now, if you find yourself looking forward to the thought have not having to rev the engine to get torque and power, a softer, smoother, more bassy engine note, a more refined ride (maybe...), more luxury etc etc than the 135 will do the job.
I have not driven either but my experience with an e46 330i confirmed in my head that a 'M sport' car is in now way a substitute for a real M car. That said the 135i is promising to be a bit on the sportier side...
Either way I'd say wait for the initial rush of the new model to be over and bag yourself a decent test drive before committing to anything. I have a sneaking suspicion that any M Sport model just will not do after having a real M car. That said I know someone who wants to chop his M3 cab for a 330 cab as finds the car to aggressive....)

I agree with the Z4M coupe comment.
Negotiate a huge discount on a nearly new one (as descibed elesewhere on PH).

It fell through, I turned up on sat to collect and there was some boocks over service history, the car had an extra unscheduled oil service so they used this to say it had missed a service, evem though it hadn't and I proved it. They then went on about the fact that I had Eibach springs on the car and Peformance friction pads, the fact of the matter is they agreed a deal which was not really that good for them and they wanted out, shisters!
Anyway, placed a deposit on a Carbon Black/Imola one today, a bit more but is an 07 car with 250 miles on the clock, so hopefully will have it for the weekend.
