basic question about M5
Discussion
hi, i've had a couple of M3's before (regd 95, and 03), and one of the few downsides for me was the need for revs. ie, being a bit lazy,i like to pull from low revs without the need to change down.
am thinking of a 2000-2002 M5, and am interested if the difference in torque vs the M3 and the V8 means that it pulls hard from low revs, say pulls from 30mph in 6th??
cheers

The E39 M5 is a torquey beast, and max torque is developed at 3800 rpm (500 nm), but has a very healthy and flat torque curve from low down, so no need to rev it as such.
30 mph and 6th (which is an overdrive gear) is, however, very low and not mechanically very sympathetic, although perfectly possible.

If you want to being that sort of thing you really need something supercharged turbo diesel maybe? E55, 535D?
If you not into the pipe slippers option (535d, E55) then maybe a supercharged e39 M5 will do. Didn't Alpina do one of those, the B5 or something??

Although I think think 6th gear is really an economy gear in most cars, even the new M5....If you not into the pipe slippers option (535d, E55) then maybe a supercharged e39 M5 will do. Didn't Alpina do one of those, the B5 or something??

Found this very usefull as i have been doing 30 in 6th But I will not be doing it anymore, its just I havnt had the car long and most of my jouney to work is 30 mph in fact all of it is 30 mph 30 mph and 6th (which is an overdrive gear) is, however, very low and not mechanically very sympathetic, although perfectly possible.

hi, thanks for the advice. I had a porsche 997S which pulled well from low revs, so u could pootle around town without much effort (but then cane it around the lanes, or track etc). I've also had a 2003 E55, which of course has unbelievable acceleration and torque, but was a nightmare in every other (driving)aspect, and basically lethal in the wet (the "pipe n slippers" description mentioned previously is also sadly true). Currently running a little golf R32, with "DSG". A bit gutless higher up the range, but grip and torque (and noise) are astounding. lots of fun. Thinking of either the latest RS4, or 01/02 M5 for the next one (sorry, i simply cant stand the looks of the present M5, even tho its awesome in all other respects).
