M5 New Exhaust Advice needed
Discussion
Have had the E39 M5 for a couple of weeks now and can’t make my mind up whether to get a new exhaust or not
I just don’t think its loud enough, I want it to rumble and sound a bit like an AC Cobra <<< this would probably be too loud
I am not looking for performance gain, just want the sound
Any advice on what exhaust to get would be really great
Cheers
Dave

I use my Griffith 500 with straight through pipes as a yard stick as to what sounds good V8 wise. I have to say Tubi seem to have got it about right. The E39 M5 is crying out for it. I think BMW could have made more of an effort in the sounds dept. But that's the trouble when they're appealing to the mass market. They could also have made all M3s sound like CSLs at not much extra cost.
Gone Hayward & Scott myself, love it, sounds awesome and you can specify what size tail pipes you want - I went 75mm but some people have gone 80mm. Takes about 4 weeks to manufacture and about 90 minutes to fit .

I need info on price and is it full or part system and what is involved with fitting ..... does engine need re-map ??
Do you have anymore vids of the exhaust ?
How does it sound on moterway ?
As i dont know much about this i need as much help as i can get
Dave
Neighbours haven't been too bad, although one old boy popped across the other day whilst I was cleaning the car to ask what was wrong with my exhaust
Fitting is really easy, it's only the rear boxes and pipes that are changed. There's no need for any re-mapping unless you want to do that as well.
You'll be looking at around £500 plus VAT. (Mention you've seen the good feed back on the M5 forum group buy).
Although quite loud it's not too intrusive for motorway driving - most of mine is Motorway. What you will find is that you are driving with the window open a lot more and looking for tunnels or built up areas. As a result fuel consumption goes down as you are forever dabbing the accelerator.
It really starts to wail at about 4k revs especially in 3rd gear and there is often a fantastic popping /burbling sound on over run.
Over on http://www.bm3w.co.uk you'll find loads of info, one of the members "Welsh Willo" did have some fantastic footage. Perhaps you could PM and he'll share it.
This is one of his vids from inside the car.

I only have one other video myself and once again that was on start up. So not really that great.

its all to do with the resonator
i.e the middle box
the M5 v8 has a pronounced boom which BMW designed : damped out with a huge heavy centre section
Ian @ H&S has two options
1. keep centre section : and run very small back boxes these are 500+vat No remap needed
or
2. go the xpipe route and have no centre exhaust box : much more ummm vrmmm
in the end i went the whole hog
headers / race cats / x pipe and beefier rear boxes than option 1 and a re-map
we saved over 60kgs of weight as well
see http://hsrwcsm5.blogspot.com/
if you want to see the other vid : message me on youtube : user name is welshwillo

Have spoken to Ian today and he said six weeks wait to get them done
Was also thinking about some custom tips or maybe just large bore standard pipes
I was just looking at your blog and thinking I would like to colour code my car but now sure wether it would look right on a silver M5
Could you tell me how much it cost to get that done please ??
Thanks to all for the advice
Cheers
Dave
Can anyone help me cure what appears to be an unresolvable issue with the (standard) Tubi seeming to 'knock' on mine?
Being of bigger bore, it must be nudging th'eatshield or sommat at one or more points along it's length and it drives me nuts on certain types of rough road (i.e. all sections of road these days!).
Is there some kind of bush to jam somewhere because I'm thinking of putting the original back on.
I actually find it a bit boomy when lazy through the gears, maybe the H&S one's better? Worth a punt d'you reckon?
Then again, rather like the whiff of napalm, I do enjoy the melthrob on start up of a morn. {And it's still the best car ever manufactured. }

Haven't got an M5 yet but I have always thought that the likes of Tubi dont really sell anything that special, IMO you are paying for the guaranteed fitment and an exhaust that is loud but not so much so it fails the MOT for excessive noise or emissions.
I was thinking along the lines of this guy on M5board: http://www.m5board.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=... Some aftermarket silencers and straight pipes from the manifolds. No resonators, no cats, nothing!
Seeing as I have my own pit I feel happy to spend a few hours a year swapping the pipes to put the standard cat system to pass the MOT. And it would only cost a few hundred pounds for the silencers and a good quality pipes in between...
Or would this destroy the economy and torque, so I would be better off with not saving money and going for a full Xpipe system?
