Vanos one way valve mod ?

Hi guys, im looking at buying a E39 M5 2000 model. Is there any way VISUALY to tell whether this valve on the vanos oil pipes has been fitted . If so where does the little critter live ? . Also should i be wary of a 70-80k car that has not had a clutch ?, what is a good sign that clutch is on its way out ?? any idea how much a new one costs ??
