E92 M3 cancelled orders
Discussion
Had a call from the dealer I've got my deposit down at for the new M3. He told me he was calling up everyone to check if they're still interested. I am number 5 in their queue, and he said that I'd moved up two places due to people dropping out.
Now I know it's only one dealer, but if that's representative that's 50% of the pre-orders being cancelled. Am I missing something, or is there an underlying message not to buy here?

It could be reverse psycology!
it always happens. People's circumstances change. Idiots put their name down thinking they'll make an instant profit (even though BMW is now wise to this). I was moved up the queue for my M5 because of two cancellations, one a guy who lost his job, the other a guy who left the country.

I sold my e46 M3 for the price i paid, after 12 months and 10k miles. I have absolutely no doubt i'll do the same this time around.
Spot on, me too. Second year in is when values will start too drop. There are ALWAYS cancelled orders when they are placed so far ahead, even on the most sort after cars. People are desperate for GT3s at the mo. and still paying well over list but there were still quite a few cancelations and therefore doom mongers, on day one. As long as the order bank exceeds production - and BMW always makes sure it does for the first year - residuals will be good. Even with drop outs my dealer has sold out of his anticipated allocation for 30 months!

I would not worry. It means little. Most dealers will only get c5 cars pa so it will be in short supply. That said cars depreciate a lot more these days. I would not bank on selling after a year for list incl options but it will still be cheap motoring.
PS Car is a bit pricy though!

If you want to be sure of getting list back six months is probably as long as you'll want to leave it with this car. Leave it twelve and you'll probably be competing with other used cars as it moves from a sellers to a buyers market - which can happen VERY quickly. That said I sold my 997GT3 after five months because I thought that cut off point was near but a couple of months later they're STILL getting list or over. It really is about timing. Or of course you can just buy the car, enjoy it and not worry about the money at all.

I'm not sure whether to keep the Boxster and go straight for a MDCT M3, or to get the manual M3 then an MDCT one. (I've got deposits down in two places.) If I won't lose money on the manual M3 then I'll probably get a manual one first.
If you've got a good relationship with your dealer then you shouldn't have had to pay a deposit until you specced the car - and then only £500. If you are getting one of the first cars you should have been asked to spec. it by now BTW.
